THANK YOU from MOLLY and BEN
A big thank you to everyone who made the event what it was ...
The Jaques Family; Tony Hargreaves, our awesome MC; Foodstuffs – Greg and Lauren; Happy Fish Band; Paparoa
Lions Club for cooking amazing food; Pam and Mark Ottaway for their famous doughnuts; Kaiwaka School Kapa Haka
Group; Kaiwaka Fire Brigade; Dinsdale Candy Floss; Kaipara Bouncy Castles; Amanda Pride Face Painting; Ryan at
Engtech for the new plaque outside the Store; All the very generous suppliers for our giveaways; Our awesome Crew and
Family; And to the best community – thank you for celebrating with us and for supporting our Four Square to continue
operating for the next 100 years!
In fact it is two centuries. Firstly, recognition of one
hundred years of service from the Jaques Family
shop for ninety-six years and a further four years
from Pedersens and the Steiners.
FJ Jaques and Sons became Four Square in 1967, but
actually Four Square has been operating in New
Zealand for one hundred years - so that was the
second celebration. A photographic timeline was on
the front page of the July Bugle.
The Four Square car park party plans had to be
abandoned because of the wet weather, but the War
Memorial Hall proved ideal. Even with a ‘bouncy
castle’ in the far corner there was room for a massive
crowd to enjoy the Four Square ‘giveaways’
and witness the historical recollections of Bill
Jaques. Bill (eldest son of Frank Jaques is 92
years old) is blessed with a sharp memory an
was able to share the shop’s amazing past.
The dynamics of the shop has certainly
changed over the years but it is still the
hub of Kaiwaka giving sterling service.

WEATHER
JULY
June might have been a fairly settled
month as far as rain went but the
weather gods made up for it in July.
At our place I recorded
205ml for
the month of July over 21 days
.
The rain came in a block of 5 days
then a few days of fine weather but
then back to another block of rain over
12 days followed by a couple of fine
days then finishing the month with
another couple of heavy showery days.
Derek in
Hakaru had 169ml
of rain
over the month over 19 days. He had
13 days in a row. The temperature has
certainly dropped at night.
We haven’t seen any ducklings on our
property as yet but there has been
sightings elsewhere. I went to Waipu
this week and noticed that the waterfall
on the Brynderwyns has been
splashing out onto the road.
Take care all, Karen

ABBY CHRISTO
Abby Christodoulou
got her start in
X-Factor 2015 as one half of country
pop duo Mae Valley. She’s now six
years into a solo project under a
shortened version of her name, Abby
Christo (pictured left).
Although she moved to Taranaki at the
age of 12, Abby Christodoulou
originated from the small Northland
town of Kaiwaka (“I think there was
about 90 people at my school”) and
has always enjoyed singing. She began
writing songs when she was 13.
Following the duo’s split in 2017 Abby
moved to Sydney to pursue a solo
career. Her first solo release, Kiss Me
Into Monday, arrived in 2019 and she
has since released several singles and
an EP, ‘Slow Down Girl’, in 2022. Co-
written with and produced by Peter
Holz, her the single Note To Self, came
from a deeply personal place she
reveals.
She is now living the dream in the city
of country music, where she is sharing
her latest single after recently
relocating to Nashville, TN. Just A
Broken Heart is a nostalgic, coming-of
-age country-pop track that pairs
Abby’s
relatable
and
emotive
songwriting with driving guitars, and
layers of tender vocals.
You can follow Abby on her Facebook
page.

GARDENING for
YOUNG & OLD
AUGUST:
Nearly the end of
Winter, but don’t be lulled into
a false sense of ‘Spring is here”! It may
not be, and September can be a cold
wet month in our area.
PEST CONTROL
I bought a punnet of seedling lettuce
three days ago and went to plant them
yesterday
and
discovered
slugs
(several) nearly at the top of each
individual plant container - squashed
them of course! Now is the time to be
carrying out slug and snail control!
One way to control these pests is to
encourage visitors to your garden – the
feathered kind.
A home garden supplies nectar, bugs
and other food for birds. A simple way
to attract our feathered friends is put a
couple of long nails into a post – push
a couple of citrus half rounds onto the
nails. You will be surprised how the
birds enjoy these.
TIDY UP
August is the time for a last-minute
tidy up – clip hedges, edges of paths
and some pruning; prepare the
vegetable garden for Spring planting
by digging in compost, blood and
bone, and sheep pellets. These
fertilisers help condition the soil and
attract earthworms; aerate the compost
heap to encourage rapid breakdown;
add late prunings to keep the worms
happy and well
fed.
ORCHIDS
A
beautiful
plant – their
flowers
are
among the best-
known flowers
in the world.
Orchid growing
is one of the
most
popular
and rewarding
facets
of
horticulture in
New
Zealand.
The most common orchid and easiest
to grow is the cymbidium. It is hardy
enough to remain outdoors all year
round in milder area of the country.
Cymbidium orchids flower from late
June to early December – peak
flowering is from August to October.
Colours range from green to yellow,
red to white and other shades.
What soils do orchids like? It must be
very porous. When watering the water
must literally pour through the soil.
Coarse bark and pumice mixes are
great for the plants; orchids respond
very well to regular applications of
liquid fertiliser from Spring to early
Autumn. A high nitrogen fertiliser is
required during early summer to boost
new growth.; then a lower nitrogen
fertiliser is used in late summer to
harden the plant as flower buds appe
ar.
Enjoy your garden

CHOOSING A
MENTOR
‘Instruct the wise and
they will be wiser still.’
Proverbs 9:9 NIV
The further you go in the pursuit of
your potential, the more ground you
will have to break. This is where you
can benefit from the experience of
others. As the Chinese proverb says,
‘To know the road ahead, ask those
coming back.’
Look for two things in a mentor
:
1.
Someone
who
possesses
wisdom
.
The
understanding,
experience and wisdom of mentors
helps you solve problems you’d have a
hard time handling on your own. Wise
people often use just a few words to
help you learn and develop. They open
your eyes to worlds you might not
otherwise see. They help you navigate
difficult situations. They enable you to
see opportunities you’d miss. They
make you wiser than your years and
experience.
2.Someone
who
provides
friendship and support
.
The first question most followers want
to know of a mentor is, ‘Do you care
for me?’ The reason for this question
is obvious.
Who wants to be guided by a person
who isn’t interested in them? Selfish
people will assist you only as far as it
advances their own agenda. Good
mentors provide friendship and
support, unselfishly working to help
you reach your potential.
Knowledge without support is sterile.
Advice without friendship feels cold.
Candour without care is harsh.
But when you are being helped by a
person who cares for you, it’s
emotionally fulfilling.
Development comes from both the
head and the heart. And only caring
people are glad to share both with you.
Jesus told those he mentored, ‘I will
never leave you nor forsake you’
Hebrews 13:5 NKJV

KAIWAKA NETBALL
PRIZEGIVING 2024
We were lucky recipients of an ANZ
netball grant, which were used to cover
the fees of the girls. Rebel Sports
kindly donated us a whole list of gear -
balls bags, cones, nets, bibs whistle and
more. This was a huge help for our
club as starting it back up would have
been a lot harder without these great
grants.
We held our first Kaiwaka Netball
prizegiving for our ‘Future Ferns’ since
re-opening the club with a great little
award celebration followed by a
potluck dinner at the KSA with parents
and extended whanau attending. Each
player received a medal, certificate,
team photo and a goodie bag. The
medal was extra special for the girls as
they have been watching the Olympic
Games and they were ecstatic to
receive their very own medal!
Trophies were awarded to: Most
improved player - Harper Gray; Team
Spirit - Ashley Fuller; Player of the
Year - Skye Alway. All the girls
should be very proud of their efforts
this year!

thought was awesome! Our home

Our juniors had their last official

KAIWAKA ATHLETICS
The Kaiwaka Athletic club is planning
to operate once more in the 4th term
2024 and 1st term 2025, in daylight
saving hours at Otamatea High School.
Because the school has grown, the
junior and senior athletics have been
split up. The junior ones will run in
Term 4 which means that the facilities
will all be prepared for us, which will
be a bonus. ~ Eileen

COLIN SMITH
Sadly, early in August we had to farewell one
of our Foundation members, Colin Smith.
Maungaturoto Rotary was formed in August 1969 (yes, we
are 55 years old this year) and until shifting to Whangarei,
Colin, with the support of Irene, was a huge contributor to
our club. Colin also attended the inaugural meeting of
Whangarei South in 1975. He owned the local Gas station
and was an active supporter of many activities within
Maungaturoto and even after he left, he and Irene would
bring their caravan down so they could attend our Club
functions. All of us who have known him are grateful that
he shared a part of our lives.
PRESIDENT TIM
By the time you read this, we will have our current
President, Tim Magill, back with us. We know that he is a
very community minded person and we look forward to his
ideas for this Rotary year. Tim has also agreed to help me
with the Driver Mentoring. This is great news as this will
give us more scope in getting people (regardless of age)
from their Learner’s to Restricted license.
CAMINO de SANTIAGO
We are now meeting on a
fortnightly basis and at a
recent
meeting
Val
Hawkes gave us a very
interesting talk on her
recent completion of the
Camino de Santiago in
Northern Spain. Val has
completed this pilgrimage
several times before and is
now providing information
to locals who are keen to
complete this adventure. If
one lives in Europe, it can
be completed in smaller
sections. However, most
people who travel from
NZ aim to complete the
800km journey in between 33 to 40 days, but completion is
the aim not the time frame. This picture depicts the
precarious nature of the nesting habits of storks who also
nest on power pylons, dropping their extraneous material on
anyone who passes underneath.
Exchange Student, Jamie
We have been receiving regular letters from our Exchange
Student, Jamie. At the moment she is with her second of
three host families. She is being kept very busy, not only
with her schooling in Belgium, but also with extra-
curricular activities which have included a two week Scout
camp and a sailing activity on which only French was
spoken. This will be very beneficial for her as her last host
family only speaks French. We look forward to hearing
more about these after she returns in January. Jaimie was
also able to attend one of the preliminary Olympic
basketball matches in Paris.
Remember, if you have any suggestions of ways we may be
able to help in our wider community, please do not hesitate
to talk to one of our members. – 021 142 0357, Eileen

‘FISHING’ IN WARTIME! 1944
“Dad writing to his sister Muriel from
his North Africa base with MED. M.E.
Communication Sqn. El Aovina -
‘I gather by your letter that you
still have some fish out of the
river now and again? How I miss
them and would like to have a go
again and try my skill-I have a
soft spot for fishing at Te Ihu. We
don’t often see fish as the Med. is
very poor in that respect, but we
had lobster for lunch today! They
come from hundreds of miles
away, so we send a plane for them
and bring them alive in the wings
of a Hurricane. They don’t keep
long so it’s the
only way - the poor
taxpayer!
’ ~ Peter Linnell
NB. F/O Brian Linnell’s - an Oneriri farmer served in the RNZAF, WWII. His
rank was Flying/Officer. He completed two tours (1135 hours) in a variety of
aircraft: VIP transport pilot/first tour was with 608 Sqn. flying Lockheed
Hudsons on escort duty and U Boat hunting - based in North Africa; Dakota was
aircraft used for VIP transport purposes (DC3)..sometimes on secret missions
with up to 12 fighter escorts; both day and night time. Dad had a couple of later
solo flights in a Hurricane (change from regular Dakotas and Lockheed Hudsons
etc.) - he flew these craft ‘in between times’ while on duty with the
Communications Squadron.”

KAIWAKA VOLUNTEERS KNIT FOR
WHANGAREI HOSPITAL
Kaiwaka Whangarei Hospital Knitting Group began in August 2014.
This was from an idea Gale Matheson had after visiting her mother in Rotorua.
Her mother had wool and was knitting for the Rotorua Hospital Axillary Group.
Once a month volunteers came in to help create beautiful knitwear for the
children in hospital. Most of these volunteers were retired.
Gale came back to Kaiwaka and decided to
reach out to Whangarei Hospital to see if
there was a need. She spoke to the wonderful
staff at the Ward 2 Playroom. The idea was
accepted. Gale then placed an advertisement
in the Kaiwaka Bugle inviting interested
people to meet at the Coffee Pot (now Tulip
Bakery). Five knitters agreed it could work; a
day to meet at the Apple Basket was decided.
A year later they met in the Archie Bull Hall.
The Group advertised for wool and later
fabric for the wide range of
garments that they now make.
Over the last ten years there
have been many members
come and go. Some of those
who have moved to different
locations are still knitting and
sending their beautiful knitting
to the hospital.
The knitted garments for Ward
2 (children one to sixteen
years) include knee rugs,
beanies, scarves and fingerless
gloves for the Renal Unit;
Prem knitting for SCBU
(Special Care Baby Unit);
Child hearing Clinic, Maternity
Unit for newborns; and
recently to the Child Outreach
Centre.
The fabric is used to make
carry bags for the patients to
carry their welcome pack (no
more plastic) and take any
items home with them. The next project the group embarked on was to make
MRI gowns for the children as the ones they have were too big.
The Playroom supply calico for the volunteers to make calico dolls for the
patients and these are used to show where any surgery or injection site will be.
The children can colour these and they take them home.
The group also makes rugs, jumpers, cardigans, booties, socks, socks, slippers,
gloves and scarves. There are also some very talented ladies who sew the most
amazing patchwork quilts of all sizes, MRI gowns, bags, dolls, pyjamas and
some beautiful toys.
No matter your skill level you are most welcome to join us each month – 10am
on the second Tuesday at the Archie Bull Hall.
We are always looking for donations of wool/yarn and fabric. For more
information about the Knitting Group contact Gale Matheson 0274149576.

BOOK REVIEW
Recently I've read Fourth Wing and

riders.
“
I'd had my eye on this series for a
while as I'd heard good things about it
from others, and I was not
disappointed. It's exciting, thrilling, full
of surprises - and what's not to like
when there are dragons that can talk to
their bonded riders telepathically?! I
can't wait for the next installment.
