The Kaiwaka Domain Board, on the current Kaiwaka Sports Assn
site, was formed in the early 1920s. The opening of the Kaiwaka
Domain and Sports Grounds was on 12 March 1960 with a Gala Day
and the crowning of the carnival queen. Pictured above Brenda
Leabourn -Business Queen, Marie Connelly - Maori Queen, Beryl
Donaldson - Farming Queen, Kathryn Harmer - Sports Queen. In April 1961 flood lights were installed at Kaiwaka Domain -
first rugby match under lights.
On August 17, 1924 Jaques General Store in Kaiwaka was opened. Following the centennial celebrations Kaiwaka Four Square
owners Molly and Ben Steiner paid tribute to the Jaques family who owned and operated the Four Square on the corner site for
96 of those 100 years with the erection of a stunning ‘photo-op’ frame. Here Pam, Reg and Bill Jaques can be seen enjoying a
chat in the sun under the new sign. Thank you to Ryan and the guys at Eng tech for making this sign.
KAIWAKA SKATEPARK IS ‘GO’
Kaiwaka Can has been steadily making progress on the new skatepark project. We are now well advanced in the formal planning
and consents process and expect to start construction works early next year. See more information on page 7.

WEATHER
AUGUST
For the month of August we only had
16 days of rain, and the ground is quite
dry in most places. All of our 3 water
tanks are full to the top – which is a
good position to be in at this time of the
year.
I went to Gundagai Australia at the
beginning of September, and they have
had cold miserable windy conditions
until the day we arrived, then it came
out
beautifully
warm
with
a
temperature of 22 degrees and a light
wind. Much like we have had here. I
hope it stayed that way for them.
My rain records for August here at
home in NZ are as follows: 100mm of
rain over 16 days.
Derek in Hakaru recorded 120mm of
rain over 18 days, quite a difference
over such a short distance.
Our trees are colouring up nicely now
and everything is looking fresh and
green. Spring is such an unpredictable
season, so fingers crossed we get
enough rain to keep the tanks full for
summer. Take care all, Karen
The September meeting was well
attended with 4 Warkworth Section
members, including the Northland
president Joy Harper-Keeley.
Members enjoyed the recent ‘Celebrating
Spring’ at the RSA and look forward to
their return.
Six members will attend the Whangarei
Section birthday; Annie had a birthday;
and Pam’s health is on the mend.
Lena gave a report on the Whangarei
meeting.
Thank you to our 4afternoon tea
hostesses; Ann and Jan will hostess
at the
next meeting on Thursday 24 October,
1.15pm.

RODNEY NEIGHBOURHOOD SUPPORT
Neighbourhood Support (NS) for you, is all about knowing who your
neighbours are and being there for them in times of need as they would be
for you. It is about knowing how to contact each other should you need help or
advice. NS strengthens community spirit, minimises crime, enables people to
share information, ideas and insights and helps us support each other in times of
need. NS aims to make our homes, streets, neighbourhoods and communities a
safer and more caring places in which to live.
Rodney Neighbourhood Support is based in the Matakana Community Policing
Centre and cover the Rodney policing districts of Mangawhai, Kaiwaka,
Wellsford, Warkworth, Helensville, Orewa and Kumeu.
3 Ways To Connect With Your Neighbours.
Look Out: Help keep your community safe by looking out for your neighbours. If something doesn’t look right, let
them know or get help if needed.
Reach Out: Wave, say ‘kia ora,’ or introduce yourself. Welcome new residents to your street when they move in.
Help Out:
Share surplus from your garden or fruit trees.
Offer to take the rubbish out for someone who needs a
hand. Take time to chat with someone who lives alone.
Neighbours that know each other are
more likely to offer, accept, and ask for
help when they need it. Let’s build a
stronger New Zealand by staying more
connected.

Kaiwaka Can has been steadily making progress
on the new skatepark project.
Those who caught up with this at the
public meetings in March will
remember that there was a resounding
positive reception to the concept of a
skatepark at Kaiwaka. We are now well
advanced in the formal planning and
consents process. We expect to start
construction works early next year.
In addition to the Skatepark project, we are also well down the road on delivering
a pontoon to be built on the river bank at McClean Park. This will enable the
enthusiastic kayakers around town to explore our wonderful waterways. We
expect to have the designs in hand within a few weeks, and to be able to then
formalise the consent application to Northland Regional Council.
Other past and future projects by Kaiwaka Can include:
We have an ongoing Kaiwaka Lights programme (many done; many planned);
the two footbridges (completed two years ago);
tidying & drainage of the old McLean Park (ongoing);
the footpath linking these and businesses along the west side of SH1 (work in
progress);
the mid-winter Lantern Festivals (two events so far);
a proposed pedestrian and cycle path around the river bank (concept stage).
We are progressing exceptionally well for such a small team! An enormous vote
of thanks is due to all of the great people who have been contributing to making
all this possible.
We are asking YOU, our community for support.
Please help us in whatever way you can. Funds are obviously in great demand.
Your membership in Kawaka Can and financial support is essential for us to keep
up the good work.
We also need to quickly grow our team of resourceful, dedicated volunteers to
help these projects along. We need your help with fund raising,
communications, events, public activities, electrical & engineering works,
landscaping. We need your ideas and your opinions. We need do-ers AND
dreamers. Every voice and every set of hands is welcome!
Please get involved to make Kaiwaka an even better place to live.
Attend a meeting (every third Wednesday of the month). Call our

OTAMATEA HIGH SCHOOL
PRESIDENT
TIM
arrived
at
his
first
meeting
with
some
suggestions for moving
forward. He wants us to
actively look for avenues
where we can support
other community groups
by helping with manpower. We do have
a couple of ideas for the next two
months which we will implement and
hopefully other projects will come to
the fore.
JUST A HEADS UP
.
Applications are now open for the
Rotary President’s Scholarship. This is
worth $1500 and is aimed at any young
person aiming for tertiary education.
They do not need to be school leavers.
Application forms are available at
Otamatea High school.
However, if you would like one
emailed to you, please text me your
email address and I will ensure that you
get one. (021 142 0357). Applications
close on the 5 th November.
DRIVING PROGRAMME.
We continue to work in with Otamatea
High School’s driving programme. As
we can, we provide 12 free lessons to
Learners who are aiming for their
Restricted License. Drivers have a
choice of using their own or our car for
the test. We also make our car available
so that the practical part of the
Defensive Driving course that the
school runs, can be completed.
NIKAU GROVE
We have recently had a walk around
Nikau Grove in Whaka Street. We have
a small amount of tidying up to do in
this area, but that is weather dependent.
This is a pretty patch of native bush
with a magnificent kauri tree at the
beginning. Even with the wet weather
we have had, the path is not too
slippery, but best to wear solid footwear
because of dampness.
PIROA FALLS
We are also going to see how Piroa
Falls (Gorge Road) have fared over the
winter. Even though this project was
initiated by our Rotary Club, in recent
years,
DOC
have
taken
more
responsibility for the maintenance.
However, with their cutback in funding,
we do not want to see this little gem
deteriorate.
SENIOR’S AFTERNOON TEA
An early notice – the Senior’s afternoon
tea will take place at the Centennial
Hall on Friday 15th November. Once
again we will be treated by the singers
trained by Maura Flower. We will be in
touch with you early in November so
we can ascertain numbers attending.

From the Principal, Todd Malcolm ...
‘I want to express my gratitude for the warm welcome I've
received as the new principal of Otamatea high school. It
has been a privilege getting to know our fantastic students,
dedicated staff, and supportive community.
In addition to academic pursuits, term three has been a
vibrant showcase of our students' diverse talents and
passions beyond the classroom. Our sports teams have
displayed skill and sportsmanship in competitions across
various codes, while our music and art groups have
enriched our school community with their creativity and
performances. It has been inspiring to witness the
enthusiasm and commitment of Otamatea students.
All these activities foster a sense of pride and belonging
within our school and community.

DREAM BIG IN SMALL GARDENS
National Gardening Week: 21 - 28 October 2024
EMBRACE SMALL SPACES
Forget
the
quarter
acre
section. With just a patio or
small balcony, you can still
have a thriving food and flower
garden.
To
celebrate
National
Gardening Week Yates is giving
the
Kaiwaka
Bugle
an
opportunity to give away a prize
containing everything you need
to get your small garden
underway.
Send your answers to the
following questions and be into
win:
Q. 1. What does National Gardening Week aim to foster?
Q. 2. List 5 bee attracting flower plants
Q. 3. What is your favourite hanging basket compilation?
Email your answers to kaiwakabugle@kaiwaka.co.nz by Monday 21 October.
The first correct reply will win a Yates hamper of Yates vegie and flower seeds
specially selected for small gardens together with a selection of fertilisers.
Fill your pots, hanging baskets or windowsill with a selection of Yates vegie
seeds including choy sum, tomato, lettuce, dwarf beans, beetroot, radish,
coriander and onion. Bring in the bees with a delightful burst of colour from
marigold, pansy, petunia and lobelia. Add to that, Yates Thrive range of
fertilisers in granular and liquid - citrus and fruit, tomato, vegie and herb, rose
and flower, strawberry and berry fruit and camellia, gardenia and blueberry -and
you’ve got the perfect start to a bountiful summer.
Yates spokesperson, Fiona Yates, says everyone can master the art of compact
gardening. Established in 2015, National Gardening Week aims to foster a love
of gardening with a focus on growing not only plants but friendships, good
health, strong communities and closer connections with nature. Whether it’s
a
few pots on the balcony, a small patch or an extensive garden, everyone can
experience the joy of gardening.
NORTHLAND RAIL LINE REOPENED
KiwiRail officially reopened the North Auckland Line last
Wednesday 25 September - following 20 months of extensive
repairs due to severe weather damage from the January 2023
storms and Cyclone Gabrielle to more than 200 sites damaged
sites along the 180km stretch between Swanson and
Whangārei.
There are more than 60 road or pedestrian level crossings and more than
80 crossings on private land where vehicles and people can potentially
encounter trains.
Please watch out for trains, stay off tracks and use official crossings only.

SCHOOL
Kia ora Whanau and Community,
A big thank you to Te Pataka o Kaiwaka for supporting our
Garden to Table program and providing school supplies for
our tamariki.
Here are some comments from our children when asked
about the Garden to Table program and their experiences
this year: ‘
I have learned how to use a knife and to make
a good dinner.’; ‘I help out at home. I help cook, clean,
and prepare the table and the food.’; ‘I liked planting,
helping the earth and I liked helping others doing the
gardening too.’ ; ‘I learned how to plant properly and how
to tell what a weed is
and what is not a
weed.’
The FUN RUN was an
awesome fundraising
event for our kura!
The smiles on our
student's faces said it
all. THANK YOU to
our parents, whanau
and community for
showing your support

GARDENING for the
YOUNG & OLD
SEPTEMBER/
OCTOBER
Now it’s Spring and the
willows and poplars are a
beautiful shade of green –
dormant in winter they have burst into
life again. Some bulbs, like the
daffodils, run their yearly cycle of
golden beauty and are now storing
energy in the bulbs until next spring.
Ornamental trees such as the flowering
cherry epitomise spring, especially in
Japan.
Fruit and pip fruit trees will be bursting
with new buds and blossom – give
them some food! A general fertiliser,
some blood and bone and a handful or
two of sulphate of potash will suffice.
Are you looking for a wonderful
flowering scented plant?
Lavender is marvellous for attracting
honeybees and bumble bees along with
the other insects needed for pollination
of pip, fruit and citrus trees including
avocadoes.
Some plants that can use a wee prune
now are:
Azaleas – cut any wayward branches
(use them for indoor flowering
arrangements), this will help to even up
the bush.
Camellias – can be trimmed to shape
after flowering and new growth
appears.
Fuchsias – tip prune to encourage
bushy growth.
Gardenias – prune lightly in warm
districts.
Hibiscus – prune once the danger of
frost has passed.
Passionfruit
–
lightly
prune
established vines.
Plumbago – trim to tidy up.
Poinsettias – prune hard after they
have flowered.
Pests
Watching
your
newly
planted
vegetables and other flowering plants is
critical at this time of the year. Watch
for pests – aphids are likely to appear
on spring growth, remove by hand or
spray with pyrethrum. Snails and slugs
not only enjoy the brassica family,
watch out for them on clivias and other
bulbs.
Cacti
A plant species not grown in many
gardens is the cactus. Cacti (plural) are
striking plants suitable for a variety of
situations. For those gardeners on
either our west or east coasts they are
ideal because they thrive in dry soils.
Many of the cacti species have large
colourful flowers, however when
taking cuttings it pays to wear stout
gloves because of the thorns.
Until next month, great gardening. ~ Mr Jo

THE FUTURE OF
THE DEN
To the people of Maungaturoto
and the old Otamatea area and
the rest of Northland.
The Den under the
leadership of Albie
and a few volunteers
needs to be put on a
more stable footing.
Albie who at the
moment is the Sole
Trader is feeling his
age and health issues
are taking their toll.
The Den has become a major player in
the funding for Health and Wellbeing
of organisations locally and Northland.
It would be a shame to see it crumble
for the want of a stable foundation.
Albie proposes that an Incorporated
Society be formed as a foundation.
He and a local accountant Justin Moore
and partner in Sudbury Accountants in
Whangarei
are
working
on
a
Constitution that will keep very close to
its present aims.
There will be a Public Meeting to
form the Incorporated Society and
elect a committee to administer it on
Sunday 13th October at 1.30pm at
the Maungaturoto Country Club and
everybody interested is welcome to
attend and have their input.
To form an Incorporated Society we
will need a paid-up Membership of a
minimum of 10 members. It is
proposed that a $5 membership fee be
paid and all office holders and those
wanting to vote on the day should be
paid up as a show of goodwill.
Organisations who have benefited
from The Den:
Maungaturoto
Dementia
Unit,
Northland Emergency Services Trust
(NEST),
North Kaipara Coast Guard, North
Haven Hospice, Ruawai Lions (Hart
Walker) for a young member of the
Community, North Kaipara Show (First
Aid cover for show day), Maungaturoto
Motocross Club (First Aid cover for
their major events including Northland
Championships), Maungaturoto St John
(Bone Injector for the local ambulance
for pain relief), Maungaturoto Fire
Brigade (for special fittings that will fit
local water trucks when needed at fires
etc.), Paparoa Lions (help with events
caravan). Northland Breast Cancer
Support Trust (which receives no
outside funding) - this is a group that
supports and help women going
through a most traumatic and painful
experience. Plus other assistance to
small groups (help with equipment and
goods).
Overall this adds up to well over
$500,000 over the last 6/7 years.

BOOK REVIEW
I've recently read City of Vengeance by
D.V. Bishop. "
Cesare Aldo, a former
soldier and now an officer of the
Renaissance city’s most feared criminal
court, is given four days to catch the killer
before the feast of Epiphany – or suffer
the
consequences.
During
his
investigations Aldo uncovers a plot to
overthrow the volatile ruler of Florence,
Alessandro de’ Medici. If the Duke falls, it
will endanger the
whole city. But a
rival officer of the
court is determined
to expose details
about
Aldo’s
private life that
could lead to his
ruin.
Can Aldo stop the
conspiracy before
anyone else dies, or
will
his
own
secrets destroy him first?"
This was an
engaging thriller, and I'm looking
forward to the next two books in the
series - they've all been nominated for
awards, including the prestigious Ngaio
Marsh Award. Not bad for a boy from
Mount Roskill!
See you in the library! ~Wendy
