A NEW EMERGENCY RESPONSE CENTRE
The big news this month is that after some hiccups and changes of venue, the Kaiwaka Emergency Response Group, a
division of Kaiwaka Can in co-operation with Kaiwaka Sports Assn can announce that our Community now has a NEW
base for any future Civil Defence Emergencies.
After Gabriel and other weather events early last
year which saw Kaiwaka isolated for about 12
hours and over a hundred
people stranded in our little township, along with
the fact that surrounding areas were

The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month was the moment when
hostilities ceased on the Western Front in 1918, following the signing of an

the saying “a stitch in time save nine” was heard a lot and we all knew what it
meant – delay doing something and it’ll take 10 times longer.
Labour Day is an annual day of celebration of the achievements of workers.
- first celebrated in New Zealand on 28 October 1890 It has its origins in the
labour union movement, specifically the eight-hour day movement, which
advocated eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation, and eight hours for
rest.

WEATHER
SEPTEMBER
Welcome to the September rain report
from our place.
We had 15.5ml in the first few days of
the month and then approximately
every other day we had a few more
mls of rain, then from the 15th to the
20th of the month we had rain every
day giving us 54.5ml over the 6 days.
The total for the month of
September at our house was 93ml,
over 13 days.
The highest rainfall recorded at our
place for the month of September
was in 2015 with 207ml and the
lowest recorded at our place was in
2008 when I recorded 45.3ml.
There have been very strong winds
during this month, with a few small
trees on our property giving up the
fight to hold on (nothing a chainsaw
won’t fix).
Derek reports from the Hakaru Valley
that he recorded 101ml for the month
over 13 days.
Take care all, Karen

ELEVEN RULES
In a speech to high school
students, Bill Gates passed on to
them the following eleven (11)
rules.
Rule 1: Life is not fair – get used to it.
Rule 2: The world doesn’t care about
your self-esteem. The world will
expect you to accomplish something
BEFORE you feel good about
yourself.
Rule 3: You will NOT make $60,000 a
year right out of high school. You
won’t be a vice president with a car
phone until you earn both.
Rule 4: If you think your teacher is
tough, wait till you get a boss.
Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath
your dignity. Your grandparents had a
different word for burger flipping.
They called it opportunity.
Rule 6: If you mess up, it’s NOT your
parents’ fault, so don’t whine about
your mistakes. Learn from them.
Rule 7: Before you were born, your
parents weren’t as boring as they are
now. They got that way from paying
your bills, cleaning your clothes and
listening to you talk about how cool
you are. So before you save the rain
forest from the parasites of your
parents’ generation, try delousing the
closet in your own room.
Rule 8: Your school may have done
away with winners and losers, but life
has not. In some schools they have
abolished failing grades, and they’ll
give you as many tries as you want to
get the right answer. This doesn’t bear
the
slightest
resemblance
to
ANYTHING in real life.
Rule 9: Life is NOT divided into
semesters. You don’t get summers off
and very few employers are interested
in helping you find yourself. Do that
on your own time.
Rule 10: Television is NOT real life.
In real life people actually have to
leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.
Rule 11: Be nice to nerds/people.
Chances are you’ll end up working for
one.

without power for a number of days it
was a clear there was a need for a permanent emergency
response facility and command centre to handle such events if
they were to occur again.
Thanks to MBIE and Northland Civil Defence our little township was
nominated to receive a substantial grant which covered the purchase and
installation of Solar Units. We were one of 60 in the North Island to be
nominated. Kaiwaka Can applied for this on behalf of Kaiwaka Emergency
Response Group and on being successful approached Kaiwaka Sports
Association to see if they were interested in being our recipients and thankfully
the Committee accepted.
We are happy to announce that the Kaiwaka Sports Association has now been
fitted with the Solar Power and as a community we thank them for the use of
their building.
The solar has now been fitted and is in operation with the excess power being
returned to the grid, this will help offset any power used within the complex. 40
solar panels and 3 batteries were supplied and installed by Huband’s Energy
Limited Whangarei.
We are truly lucky to have such a great asset in our Community. This is now the
NEW Emergency Response Headquarters and Command Centre for events
within our Area.
Funding is from the Ministry for Business, Innovation & Employment -for these
buildings to continue to be accessible during civil defence and emergency
responses in the future. ~

STILLS’ PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION
Congratulations to Jade Johnson in year 13 for her successful entry into this
year’s ‘Stills’ photography competition. Jade entered the ‘Life in motion’
category and has won first place winning a FUJIFILM X-S20 + lens kit.
Additionally, two more of her images made the
level of ‘national finalists’. The standard was
exceptionally high and there were over 2200
submissions. Jade has taken photography here
at OHS for the past two years.
LEARNERS DRIVERS LICENCE
For two days during the recent holidays 21
Year 11 and 12 students came to school for a
course run by Toni Fauonuku who is an
Education advisor for Safer Drivers. Very
skilfully, she took the students through the
New Zealand Road Code and added in some
practical activities and card games which
helped to reinforce the learning. On the second
morning Linda Smith from the AA came in
and set up a mobile testing station in H3. All
16 students and were 16 years old sat the test
and passed. The other five are turning 16 in the
next two months and we
are sure they will also pass
their test. As this was such
a great success, NZTA’s
representative,
Arthur
Webber, promised to offer
similar opportunities
next year.

GARDENING for
YOUNG & OLD
Time flies - we will soon be
celebrating Christmas!
With the threat of late cold snaps gone
it is time to plant your tomato varieties
and potatoes. Once planted be sure to
feed them and spray them every 2 to 3
weeks with a copper spray to prevent
blight.
Other vegetables to consider planting
are beetroot, beans (dwarf and
climbing),
broccoli,
cabbage,
cauliflower
and
sweetcorn.
All
vegetables will benefit from regular
dressings from blood and bone and a
general garden fertiliser – however,
make them light dressings and water
them in.
If you have asparagus do not keep
cutting the spears for too long a period.
Remember the plant needs green
‘ferns’ to put strength into the plant for
next season’s crop.
Tropical and Subtropical plants for
growing in Northland
The banana grows successfully on the
Oneriri Peninsula and surrounding
areas. It must be well sheltered from
the wind! The palm needs to be planted
with the most protection in the
warmest position in the garden.
The root system of the banana is
shallow – mostly to be found in the top
30cms of soil. It is essential the soil be
very fertile and plenty of water is
applied, especially during hot periods.
Varieties that are available are Lady
Fingers including Misi Luki and
Hamoa. There are also Goldfinger,
Cavendish, Dwarf Cavendish, Raja
Puri and Plantain available.
The pineapple can be
grown locally, but only with
extreme care! The best
method is to grow them in a
controlled temperature e.g. in a glass or
green house. Pineapples need a well-
drained soil with plenty of organic
matter; strongly acidic (do not use
lime), sulphur should be mixed with
the soil.
Purchase a whole ripe pineapple that
has its leafy crown still attached to the
fruit. Using a sharp knife, remove the
crown from the fruit and remove all
fruit flesh from the top.
Remove the bottom leaves to help
expose the stalk of the crown, then, let
dry for a week in a cool dry spot.
Fill a pot with Yates Black Magic Seed
Raising Mix leaving a hole in the
centre.
Plant the top into the centre of the pot,
backfill and water in well.
Position in bright, indirect light and
keep the soil moist until roots develop.
After 6-8 weeks, or once roots are well
developed, plant them in the ground or
pot in quality potting mix; mulch and
water regularly. It usually takes two or
so years before there is a pineapple.
All the best for your gardening ~ Mr Jo

They do not need to be school leavers.
Application forms are available at
Otamatea High school. However, if
you would like one emailed to you,
please text me your email address and I
will ensure that you get one - 021 142
0357. Applications close on the 5th
November.
ELAEAGNUS.
Several working
bees have been
held in Nikau
Grove
during
October. While
the natives are
growing well, so
too
is
the
Elaeagnus
(Elaeagnus x reflexa). We hope to
have that under control very soon. To
protect the trees, the polythene barriers
we have in place will be extended. It is
hoped that this will encourage people
(especially cyclists) to keep to the path.
PARTING THOUGHT
Because this is a shorter version this
month, I thought I would include a
recent Parting Thought – Different
members share these gems at the end
of each night’s meeting. A recent one
was: “Don’t close the book when bad
things happen in your life. Just turn
the page and begin a new chapter.”

KAIWAKA WAR
MEMORIAL HALL
AGM Report from Ad Clarijs,
president:
This past year has given us challenges
- we have a new fire alarm monitoring
and maintenance system (monthly
checks and Building WOF); new
insurance brokers; new fridge; and
cyclone damage repaired by Steve
Sheriff.
Costs have increased for the rates,
electricity and the new alarm
maintenance/inspections.
The rental from the ‘old medical’
rooms, the Community movies and
the ongoing Hall rental certainly helps
balance the books.
Thank you to the committee
members: Secretary Amanda, treasurer/booking officer
Wendy, Tony, Lindsey, Heather, Jennie, Millie Pam and
Bev. We are all volunteers, and we need you so we can
make sure this Community asset is well looked after and
maintained for the generations to come.
MOVIE REPORT. 2024
We screened 18 Movies this year - sold over 500 tickets
(similar to last year). The top movie was ‘Wicked Little
Letters’ – 78. The movie team, Ad Clarijs, Bev Chitty,
Daphne Linnell, Karen Harris would like to thank the
movie goers who help with stacking the chairs after the
Movies, etc – it is much appreciated. This is a community
event every fortnight, to raise money for Hall upkeep and
maintenance. ~ Ad Clarijs
HALL BOOKINGS
Hall users have been respectful of our facility, leaving it
clean and tidy behind them.
Regular bookings include Kaiwaka Revival Church, Tai
Chi classes, Scottish Country Dancing, Pilates classes,
Yoga classes, spiritual healer, an educator, Community
Movies, and the Kaiwaka Bugle team
The hall has also seen birthday parties, dance rehearsals for
competitions, kapa haka rehearsals, a funeral wake, school
prizegiving, political party meetings, local government
meetings, a small market, and acted as a Polling Booth for
the General Elections, and more. . ~ Wendy Howard
LIBRARY
Kaiwaka Library has 265 active adult and 31 active junior
members. There is a good team of enthusiastic volunteers in
the library, and I thank them for their efforts to help keep
the library running and a nice place to visit. They include
Heather Fuller, Daphne Linnell, Gretchen Spalinger, Judy
Just, Sue Farr, Gill Watson, Matt Watson, Jocelyn Papa,
Vicki Cox, Jill Nicholls, Karen Williamson, and me.
We issued 5,070 items during the year = 4,140 books, 1,140
junior books, 80 teen books, 180 large print books, and
2,740 other adult books. 15 magazines, 90 DVDs and 30
Blu-ray titles. Plus 12 items from the Tutu Collection
360 new items were processed includes 200 adult fiction,
30 non-fiction, 10 teen fiction, 50 junior fiction, 20 junior
non-fiction, 50 junior picture books, 7 DVDs, 5 Blu-rays,
and magazines.
We continue to offer free digital services to our members
with the support and resources of Dargaville Public Library
and Kaipara District Council; plus two book-swaps each
year, of 300-odd items, books and DVDs, each time.
An annual grant of $9,000 (plus GST) comes from Kaipara
District Council for library expenses including book
purchases and running costs for the year. About $400 was
raised by selling surplus books.
A Dargaville Public Library staff member visits each week,
catching up on news, giving help and training with library
systems when required, and exchanging books.
The library’s roof was replaced in April this year. Chorus
had their contractor do the work on their building. KDC’s
grant paid for the roofing iron and Chorus have continued
the building maintenance by replacing the toilet and
repairing the toilet floor and will be fencing off the
telephone exchange -see photo above.
~ I look forward to
another successful year in the library. Wendy Howard, Library Manager
Correspondence following the AGM noted that Connexa
that own 2degrees/Spark mobile sites, has made an
approach to lease a 7x7m section of KWMH land for the
purpose of installing a mobile site .

RANGIORA ROAD BOAT RAMP
Kaipara District Council Rangiora Road boat ramp remains closed as there's no
turnaround space in the area. If the weather plays ball the final big concrete pour is
scheduled for next week, with the ramp open for limited use in a fortnight (access will
be managed during working hours). See updated report on the KCDC Facebook page.
WHAT MAKES US 'DIFFERENT'?
WHY IS ONE PERSON HAPPY AND ANOTHER FRUSTRATED?
Some-one some-when said give me the child to the age of seven
and I will give you the man.
That dictum regulated the pace for the schools of Christendom,
and still sets dogma educationally judging by the regimen of our
national curriculum, and politically, regarding the remote and
alienating governmental structures supported by "liberals".
Yet clear differences of ability and attitude are evident in children,
and in cousins or even in towns, certainly in small towns with
little mobility. An observer simply has to discard prejudice.
How useful was that personal comment from a teacher compared
to the photocopied tick papers handed out these days?
The book Neurotribes has a big media reputation [best-seller,
prize winner, well reviewed] and my recommendation is to treat it
as history. The labels, automatic ascription of idiot status,
sentimentality and infighting chronicled here readily apply inside
status systems and inside wealth brackets. In the health system
people behave in non-standard ways and are "neurodiverse". Our emotions, physical
rhythms and ideas are particular to upbringing, to our activities and to our relationships,
and talents of unimagined quality are every-where. Check the Internet.
Author Steve Silberman hails from New York, a heaving melting pot of language, culture and
social structure. He investigates Autism, Asperger's Syndrome and "neurodiversity" responses with
particular reference to Aukus countries, and includes a substantial index with sources referenced
by chapter. This is his only book and is graced by a one-page foreword by neurologist Oliver
Sacks. ~ reviewed by Hugh P.

KAIWAKA SPORTS COMPLEX BUSTLES!
Last Saturday saw a wonderful crowd at the KSA Complex and grounds. The

KAIWAKA LIBRARY
NEW FENCE
Watch out for changes on the outside
of the library - a new fence is being put
up by Chorus (the owners of our
building) to keep the public away from
the telephone exchange which is next
to us. The library will be separated
from the rest of the property, and a new
access for the ramp will be installed.
Thank you for your patience while this
work is underway.
NEW VOLUNTEER NEEDED
We have a vacancy in the volunteers'
roster for the 4th Saturday of the
month, 10am to 2pm. Does this sound
like something you would like to do?
You need to be able to use a Windows
computer and have regular access to
emails. Full training is given. Send an
to
me
at
kaiwaka.library@gmail.com to start
the ball rolling.
BOOK REVIEW
Just recently, I've read the Martin
Scarsden series of books by Chris
Hammer - Scrublands, Silver, and
Trust. Scrublands was Hammer's very
first novel and has since been made
into a tv series.
"In an isolated country town brought to
its knees by endless drought, a
charismatic and dedicated young priest
calmly opens fire on his congregation,
killing five parishioners before being shot
dead himself.
"A year later, troubled journalist Martin
Scarsden arrives in Riversend to write a
feature on the anniversary of the tragedy.
But the stories he hears from the locals
about …”
I ploughed through these 3 books in
about 5 days, doing little else with my
time (as I'd planned), and thoroughly
enjoyed them. They're not quick reads,
expect them to take the usual amount
of time that you'd spend on books that
size - about 500 pages per book. We
have the first book on our shelves, and
the other two are in libraries around the
district and can be brought in for you
by placing a hold via Enterprise* or the
library app, or we can help you if you
need assistance.
.
See you in the library! ~Wendy
