The Open Fishing Contest and Auction held on
Saturday the 2nd & Sunday the 3rd
November was a great success. Fire Chief John Bowmar says it was the most
successful competition and auction ever. He wishes to thank the fisher folk, the
sponsors, the Fire Brigade members (and their families) and the community for their
wonderful support. Photos show some of the action.
SPARK: CELL TOWER UPDATE
‘Spark and its build partners have been
working to re-build a major Spark cell tower
providing
services
to
Kaiwaka
and
Maungaturoto after vandalism caused damage
beyond repair in January 2022. This resulted
in the 38m high tower requiring a complete re
-build, including the replacement of four large concrete
foundations. The work requires dry weather and ground
conditions, as well as avoiding disruption during key
farming periods.
To ensure the community retained a similar level of mobile
connectivity, we deployed two temporary cell towers - one
near our permanent site, and one in Kaiwaka township. This
was important because unlike our permanent tower, which
was particularly tall and
provided coverage to a large
area, temporary towers are
shorter, and cannot provide
the same kind of coverage
footprint.
While
rebuilding
the
permanent tower has been a
priority for Spark’s network
team, ongoing wet weather
conditions outside of key
farming periods, and slips
affecting the land, had
continuing impacts on our
ability to access the site with
heavy vehicles, including a
100 tonne crane, and carry
out the very complex cell
tower re-build.
We appreciate it has taken some time to resolve these
challenges, but we have now finalised plans for the
permanent tower to be rebuilt with the assistance of a
helicopter during the summer of 2024. We are looking
forward to being able to reinstate the Spark mobile service to
previous levels – and are aiming for the new tower to be live
before Christmas 2024.
We sincerely apologise to those in the Kaiwaka and
Maungaturoto communities who have been affected by the
vandalism to the cell tower and subsequent delays in trying
to rebuild a new tower. In the meantime, the two temporary
cell towers currently providing similar coverage for your
communities will continue to operate until the newly built
tower is switched on.’ ~ Samantha Smith, Spark

WEATHER
OCTOBER
Here we are in November already –
where has this year gone???
This is my report for the October
rainfall at our place.
October was a windy month with
sometimes a cool wind, morning and
evening but some nice warmth during
the day.
We had 105mm of rain over 16 days
at our place. A fair percentage of the
rain fell on the 2nd of October when I
recorded 48mm, then 20mm in the
middle of the month with bits and
pieces of rain through until the 26th to
the 30th we got another 20mm.
The rain was quickly dried up by the
warm winds and sunny days leading to
the ground now being quite dry.
Derek recorded (in Hakaru), 106mm
for the month over 19 days.
The highest rainfall recorded in
October at our place, was in 2021
with 215.5mm over 21 days.
The least rain recorded for October
was in 2013 (over 3 days) and 2010
(over 2 days) with only 12mm for
both years.

‘What a fantastic afternoon we had last
Friday at our Senior Prizegiving! It was
truly inspiring to see so many of our
students recognised for their hard work,
dedication, and achievements across
academics, sports, the arts, and service
to community. A huge congratulations
to all of our prize winners – you've
made us incredibly proud!
A special mention must go to Sophie Lawson for receiving the Dux award. This
is a tremendous accomplishment, and we wish her all the best for future
endeavours. The evening was a wonderful celebration of our students' success
and a testament to the supportive environment fostered here at Otamatea High

DRIVER MENTORING
We have been doing this for four years
now (under the umbrella of People
Potential and Roadsafe North) and
recently we have had signwriting put on
our car.
I would like to emphasize that the
service we provide is not only for
school students, but for adults as well.
We now have four mentors who each
state a day on which they prefer to be
available. We offer approximately 12
free lessons (depending on the ability of
the trainee) and also make our car
available for the purpose of sitting the
Restricted license.) It was great to see
the commitment of a number of
Otamatea High School students to
obtain their Learner’s during the recent
holidays. Please don’t hesitate to call
me if you would like to progress your
license from Learner to Restricted.
MEETINGS
We meet on alternate Tuesday nights at
the Centennial Hall at 6pm and as part
of an international organization we are
often privileged to have visiting
Rotarians from within NZ and from
other countries. Just recently we had
Carol
Cullen,
who
lives
in
Bundaberg, Australia (who was back
for Maungaturoto Primary’s 150th)
join us. Her club has a morning meeting
and is a similar size to our own. Last
year they raised $45k, so it will be
interesting to see if we can implement
any of their fundraising ventures.
NIKAU GROVE
We are continuing work on the upkeep
of this gem in Whaka Road. When this
is finished, we will be looking at other
areas in our community where we can
work. We have decided that the
Tuesdays we don’t meet will be an
ideal time to do this, especially now
that the evenings are longer.
EXCHANGE STUDENT
Jaime is now getting close to the end of
her sojourn in Belgium. During this
time she has been able to participate in
a number of activities that have been
organized for her by her host families
and her Rotary Club. She spends four
months with each host family and in the
present one, her learning and use of
French has come to the fore as the
family are predominately French
speaking. Jaime has also had the chance
to visit other European countries and
has just returned from five days in
Spain. We are looking forward to
hearing of her adventures on her return
in mid-January. 2025 will see her back
at Otamatea in Year 13.
Compliments of the Season to you all.
May you have a meaningful holiday
period. ~ Eileen

Tony Hargreaves was a young man
when he drew a Kaira farm ballot
in1962 settled in 1963.
References from ‘Centennial of
Kaiwaka 1859 – 1959’ give a
background
to
Kaiwaka
farm
development:
“FARM SETTLEMENT
Prepared from particulars supplied by
the Lands & Survey Department -In the
Kaiwaka Riding the Land Development
Branch of the Department has two
blocks under development namely
Kaira and Topuni Farm Settlements
while just outside the Riding but within
the Otamatea County is Hakaru Farm
Settlement part settled and the balance
still under development.
The blocks developed by the Land
Development Branch are now settled
by graded Ex-servicemen of World
War II.
Kaira Farm Settlement:
This block comprising some 3,822
acres is situated six miles West of
Kaiwaka and was acquired by the
Crown over a period of years from
1950 to I956 from L. I. Linnell, H. T.
Gubb, V. M. Hargreaves, Souter and
Kear.
Three sheep units on this block totalling
approximately 1,110 acres were
selected and settled by graded and
eligible ex-servicemen, who took over
their farms on permanent tenure in
1956. The settlers concerned are D. H.
Mossman, I. S. McLennan and P.
Nicholls. It is expected that the balance
of the Block will provide a further
seven sheep units.
On 19th April 1952, the N.Z. Herald
described the work being done by the
Land Development Branch: -
Few persons have any inkling of the
scope of land development which is
progressing smoothly on the rolling
country east and west of the township
of Kaiwaka.
West of Kaiwaka lies the Kaira block.
Some of the original cover consisted of
high manuka and cabbage trees before
it was laid flat by the five-ton scrub
roller used in the preparatory clearing
of this type of vegetation. The rest of
the block is covered with scattered
gorse, manuka and second-growth
bush, with about 120 acres of
unimproved grass. On the higher slopes
the scrub will be burnt off and the land
surface sown.
On 22nd April 1952, the “N.Z. Herald"
described the earth dam which had
recently been built on the Kaira Block:
Many soils in Northland do not possess
water-bearing qualities, so there is
widespread interest in the huge earth
dam being constructed by the Lands
and Survey Department for the Kaira
farm settlement scheme near Kaiwaka.
The dam's storage capacity is six
million gallons. The dam has been
designed by John Webster, land
development
engineer
of
the
department in Auckland and is
estimated to cost about £1500. The total
ponding area will cover three and a half
acres, and the greatest depth of water
will be l7ft.
It will be the largest earth dam for farm
water supply yet constructed in New
Zealand.
The dam is sited in the bed of an old
stream running through a small valley
with a catchment area of 590 acres.
The dam itself rests on a core trench
12ft. wide which was blasted out of
solid limestone to a depth of 26ft. The
overburden from a nearby hill was
removed,
and
the
heavy
clay
underneath was bulldozed into the core
and consolidated. The sloping sides of
the dam have been built of consolidated
earth and rest on the consolidated bed
of the dam, which has a base of 140ft.
To take the overflow from the dam a
spillway has been blasted out of
limestone rock. It will cope with a
rainfall of 6in in 24 hours…”
As there no more applications from
Returned
Servicemen
the
final
settlements were made in 1961 and
1962. Civilian settlers were then invited
to participate. The new families
included Bob Sceats, Jim Morrison,
Theo Mann, Eddie Cowdrey and Tony
Hargreaves.

NORTHLAND CORRIDOR
Kaiwaka Can members met with the Northland Project NZ
Transport Agency Waka Kotahi team last week - a
summary of the meeting:
It was great to have the opportunity to meet with members of the Kaiwaka
community to give an update on the Northland Corridor project. The project will
deliver 3 Roads of National Significance (RoNS) in a single Northland Corridor
which will be 100km in length, running from Warkworth to Whangārei.
The corridor has been split into three sections:
Section 1: Ara Tūhono – Warkworth to Te Hana (connecting to Ara Tūhono –
Puhoi to Warkworth)
Section 2: Te Hana to Port Marsden Highway (including an alternative to
Brynderwyn Hills route)
Section 3: Port Marsden Highway to Whangārei
The highway will be designed to RoNS standards which must be 4 laned and
mainly grade separated.
This means the new highway will be designed to a similar standard as Ara
Tūhono Puhoi to Warkworth.
Each section of the corridor is in different
stages with Section 1 – Ara Tūhono
Warkworth to Te Hana the most advanced
with designations and consents already in
place. Detailed design and construction is
expected to start on Section 1 in the late
2026.
For Sections 2 and 3 we are utilising work
that has already been done over previous
years to enable us to identify and make
decisions about the route north of Te
Hana in the first quarter of 2025.
We will be out and about in the community
over summer at a number of local events
and we’ll also provide the public with
updates through our website and e-
newsletters. Please sign up for the
newsletter

SILENCE IS
GOLDEN
Calvin
Coolidge,
the
thirtieth US president, was
known as a reserved man
who spoke very little.
One day when a reporter attempted to
interview him, the conversation went
like this: Reporter: ‘Do you wish to say
anything about the war threat in
Europe?’ Coolidge: ‘No.’ Reporter: ‘Do
you have anything to say about the
strike in the clothing factories?’
Coolidge: ‘No.’ Reporter: ‘Do you have
anything to say about the League of
Nations?’ Coolidge: ‘No.’ Reporter:
‘Would you care to comment on the
farm production problem?’ Coolidge:
‘No.’ As the reporter was leaving the
room, Coolidge unexpectedly called
him back and said with a smile, ‘Don't
quote me!’
The Bible says, ‘For everything there is
a season, a time for every activity under
Heaven. . .A time to be quiet and a time
to speak’ (Ecclesiastes 3:1, 7 NLT).
Never allow yourself to be pressured
to say something you don't want to or
get drawn in when you don't want to
talk.
Silence isn't a lack of communication;
it's a form of communication that is
very effective: ‘A fool expresses all his
emotions, but a wise person controls
them’ (Proverbs 29:11 GWT).
One thing is for sure, what you don't
say today, you won't have to explain
or apologise for tomorrow.
If your tendency is to speak without
thinking, or when you have nothing
constructive to add, weigh the situation
carefully and ask God for wisdom
before deciding to speak or be quiet.
Remember: ‘Even fools seem to be
wise if they keep quiet; if they don't
speak,
they
appear
to
understand’ (Proverbs 17:28 NCV).

KAIWAKA LIBRARY
SHELF SHUFFLE
There's a bit of rearranging going on in
the shelves at the moment. It's a work in
progress right now. The Dargaville
books have been sorted in with our
books, so there's only one place to look
if you're after something specific. The
Dargaville books have different spine
labels to our books, so are easily picked
out from our stock if that's what you're
looking for. It will all look fabulous
when it's finished!
ADULT GRAPHIC NOVELS
We have a new collection of adult
graphic novels on our shelves. Come
and take a look - there are some
interesting titles to choose from.
BOOK REVIEW
Recently,
I've
read
‘
Welcome to Consent:
how to say no, when to
say yes, and how to be
the boss of your body’
by
Yumi Stynes & Dr
Melissa Kang. This book
is aimed at teens and
tweens, and I found it to be
enlightening and easy to
read. The world has
changed considerably in the
40+ years since I was in
that age range, and what
was acceptable back then is
not always the case now,
and it was good to have this refresher. I
bought this book, and three other
similar titles by
the same authors
(on
boobs,
periods and sex),
for the library in the hopes that they
would find an audience. I hope this
review encourages someone to come
and find out more. In our library, you'll
find these books on the adult non-
fiction shelves, under 613 KAN.
I've read the first two books in the
Myrtlewood Mysteries series -
Accidental
Magic
(#1)
and
Experimental Magic (#2) by Iris
Beaglehole. "Life’s a struggle for
Rosemary Thorn and her teen daughter,
Athena. But their regular troubles are
turned upside down after Granny
Thorn’s mysterious death. Despite her
cousin's
sinister
manoeuvrings,
Rosemary returns to
Myrtlewood and the
sprawling,
dilapidated
Thorn
Manor. But there's
more to the old house
than meets the eye,
as Rosemary and
Athena soon find out
— in a whirlwind of
magic,
adventure,
mystical
creatures,
and endless cups of
tea…’ I enjoyed
these books, and
they're by a Kiwi
author, too - bonus!
The next two books in the series are on
order and will be on the shelves soon,
and we will continue to purchase the
series - there are currently 9 books - if
they remain popular.
See you in the library! ~Wendy
