RANGIORA ROAD BOAT RAMP - GATEWAY TO THE KAIPARA HARBOUR
Rangiora Road boat ramp, parking upgrade and toilet now open!
‘This upgrade started in late July this year and was carried out by WM Construction. It was partly funded with a grant of $301,000
from the Tourism Infrastructure Fund and $244,000 from reserve contributions collected from subdivisions in the greater Kaiwaka
area. Many thanks to the locals who had the vision of improving this special location, and especially the immediate neighbours for
allowing the project to be completed so smoothly. I had the pleasure of attending the new boat ramp parking and toilet opening at
Hubert Linnell Reserve in Rangiora Road, Oneriri this week.’ ~ Deputy Mayor Jonathan Larsen. Photo: The Mayor cutting the

We teach the children singing and dancing as a
large group.
We play theatre games which encourage co-
operation and creativity.
The participants are divided into smaller groups
and they devise and act in a short play, with help and
guidance from the tutors. The kids help to write the
dialogue, and determine the plot - a major part of the
creative process. We use costumes, set and props.
It is great fun – every year is different!
There is nothing quite like Youth Theatre week!!

WEATHER
NOVEMBER
November at our place was fairly mild
but lots of days with strong winds. The
sun is certainly making its presence
felt. The daytime temperatures have
elevated hugely in the last few weeks.
This pattern is said to continue for the
next few weeks until the weather
pattern turns to a La Nina – like
conditions, bringing more muggy,
rainy conditions closer to Christmas
(Sounds like the norm to me).
At our place I recorded 64.5ml of
rain over 12 days. Most of the rain
fell over five days in the middle of the
month when we got 40ml.
Derek recorded 55ml for the month,
over 11 days. Derek has rain records
from 50 years ago, as his mother Pat
Mason used to keep records.
The highest rainfall for November at
our place was recorded in 2022, when
we had 294.5ml. The 2022 – 2023
summer was one for the records, as it
continued to rain heavily right through
from mid Spring (Oct) 2022 to late
Summer (March) 2023. During that
time I recorded 4617ml.
A couple of Dad joke to finish off
with: Q
: How do you communicate
with a fish? A: You drop it a line
Q: What time is it when your clock
strikes 13? A: Time to get a new clock
Q: When is the moon heaviest?
A: When it is full’
Merry Xmas to you all. Stay safe, folks

THE KAURI MUSEUM
Local Kaipara veterinarian Rory Dean
has had a book published by Harper
Collins, about his adventures as a
country vet in this part of the country.
Scotland-born and trained Rory told
the museum at his book signing that
the local stories he recounts are true,
but the names of the people are
changed to protect their identities.
Some folk may recognise themselves!
Signed copies of Rory’s book are now
on sale exclusively at the Kauri
Museum Store, making ideal Christmas
presents for locals and people who
want the local flavour of the land with
this rollicking read.
SENIOR’S
AFTERNOON TEA
Last Friday we had a good
turnout of people from our
community. Thanks to
Terri for decorating the
supper room that created a
fantastic atmosphere. Thank you also
to Linking Hands for transporting
people who needed to be brought from
the Maungaturoto Retirement village
and the Rest Home.
Maura’s singers did not disappoint.
And once again, we were treated to an
hour of fantastic singing from a very
talented group of youngsters. Both
serious and humorous songs were
presented either as individuals or in
groups. They wound up their
performance with some traditional
Christmas songs. We are very
fortunate to live in a community where
young people are prepared to share
their talents. Thank you, Maura, for
arranging this.
TOI MAORI FESTIVAL
Thanks to President Tim and Stella for
helping out with this event on 30
November at the Otamatea High
School. Once again, the talent of our
young people came to the fore and it is
good for them to see others on stage as
well.
PRESIDENT’S SCHOLARSHIP
President Tim really enjoyed reading
all three applications and found it
impossible to separate them so has
decided to award $500 to: Annaliese
Allen, Max Bull and Willow
Campbell. All three have been
involved in the community and have
aspirations
for
the
future.
Congratulations to these three. We
look forward to following their
progress.

consider all of the market sales in your
local area that occurred around the date
of revaluation to establish market
trends and apply this to SIMILAR
properties in the local area. “My Land
Value in Kaiwaka, increased from
$400,0000 to $560,000. A real shocker
of 40 % increase in just ONE year.
So I started researching why? It seems
that I paid 16 years of overrated taxes
for mostly grazing land, native bush, a
small building area. The revaluation is
ONLY “estimated” on values “recently
sold with SIMILAR characteristics”,
regardless the inferior land quality,
infrastructure, poor access, building
limitations,
stringent
zoning
regulations, etc.
Regardless my 2 objections, QV
refuses to admit their ongoing
overrating.
Values for ratings: Grazing 20,000/ha-
Bush 5,000/ha – Building area:
estimate QV
The snake in the grass is the Building
Area “estimated” to rate your Land
Value.
Every Landowner should investigate
the correct ratio of grazing, bush, and
building area.

Page 13
Christmas Day dawned.
Through
the door of the hut I saw to my joy
brilliant blue skies overhead. Already
we had one welcome gift, that of
glorious weather.
I looked down the hut. It was hardly
recognisable. The ground was clean
and neatly swept. The scruffy walls
above the sleeping platforms were
garlanded with green boughs - the one
note of Christmas cheer the jungle
offered in abundance. Men stirred, got
up and began to move about, wishing
one another a hearty ‘Merry
Christmas’.
For once we ate our breakfast
in
leisurely,
gentlemanly
fashion.
Then we prepared for church.
We wore whatever was our
best, although it may have
been no more than a clean
loincloth. I went early to the
church, as l wanted to have a
few moments of quiet. l sat on
the ground with my back
against the trunk of bamboo. Resting
on the Holy Table was a Christmas
wreath someone had made from
bamboo branches and jungle greens.
The green wreath against the ivory-
coloured split bamboo made a picture
of serenity. Others had also come for
those moments of hallowed quiet and
private prayer.
Men entered softly. By a quarter to
eleven, when the service was to begin,
the church was full. Some were sitting
on the ground, some on bamboo
benches and some on home-made
stools. But most were standing along
the sides and at the back. Over two
thousand P.O.W.s filled the area. But
the hush I felt when I first arrived
remained unbroken.
Padre Webb entered and took his place
in front of the Holy Table. He prayed
in silence, then he raised his head and
announced the first hymn,
‘O come, all ye faithful.’
He did not need to say the
words and have us repeat
them after him. Those
who knew them sang
them; those who did not picked them
up from their neighbours. We sang the
second carol, ‘The first Nowell’. The
Padre gave a brief sermon on ‘The
Hope of Christmas’. We came to the
closing hymn, ‘Good Christian men
rejoice’.
We had hardly begun singing
it, when we heard the almost
forgotten wail of air-raid
sirens. It rose to a shriek, then
gradually died away. Far off
we could hear a rumble. We
exchanged glances. This could
not be Japanese. We kept on
singing. ln the blue sky over
our heads we could hear a four
-engine
bomber
flying
confidently in the direction of
Bangkok. We put all our
feeling into that hymn. Indeed
we sang so lustily that the prison
guards came charging into the church
shouting the Japanese equivalent of
‘Shut up! They'll hear you.’ I had
known the power of praise. But l was
not aware that it could soar ten to
fifteen thousand feet and be picked up
by a bomber crew above the engine
noise. The Padre pronounced the
Benediction and sent us forth in peace.
We were barely out of Church when
someone slapped me on the back.
‘Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas,
Ernie old boy!’ It was Bill Maclean. l
remarked to him ’lt is a Merry
Christmas - especially when you
compare it with last year.’
The happy faces of the men walking
near us and the loud hum of their
conversation as they returned to their
huts and their Christmas dinners
indicated they were all having the same
reaction. ~

CHRISTMAS GIFTS & DECORATIONS
~ Pam, a Christmas Nut
Pam’s ‘GNOMES’ are the idea this week - follow her photos:
1.Wrap your choice of yarn/wool 40 times around a firm piece of cardboard 12”
or 30cm wide. 2.Cut yarn at one edge, layout flat. 3.
Hat Brim: Cut a half inch
‘ring’ off the end of a toilet roll and begin to ‘larks head’ each piece of yarn on to the
hat brim - see photo. 4. Then push all the strands up inside the brim, add a small ball of
stuffing and tie around a couple of inches up and fluff out a pompom!. 5. Body: Lay a
10” strand of wool between middle fingers and make big pompom by wrapping over 4
fingers about 40 times, tie off using the strand and put into hat, trim to ‘beard’ shape.
Nose - add bead (stitch or glue). Pam also cut and decorated her ‘gingerbread men’.

KAIWAKA LIBRARY
CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS
We will be open our normal hours until
6pm Monday 23 December, then
closed for two weeks and reopen at
4pm Monday 6 January.
All books borrowed between now and
Christmas will be due back no earlier
than the day we reopen - the system
will adjust the date automatically until
the normal borrowing period reaches
that date.
Please stock up on reading material
before we close - it would be terrible to
run out of things to read while we're
closed!
The after-hours returns slot by the
main
doors
will
be
available
throughout the holiday, if you want to
return items while we're closed. I'll be
emptying the box periodically during
that time, so it doesn't overflow.
The library team wishes you a happy
and safe festive season, and we look
forward to seeing you again in the
new year
.
SUMMER HOLIDAY READING
PROGRAM
Kids - this summer we have "Secret
Agent School: Super Sleuthing Spies"!
Come into the library to find out what
it's all about, pick up your mission

SUMMER CATALOGUE
The new summer catalogue is out now.
Pick up your copy next time you're in
the library. It's full of book reviews and
information about what's going on in
the library community.
NEW TABLE
Many thanks to Mangawhai Library for
giving us a new table that was surplus
to their requirements. It's a lovely
addition to our furniture.
BOOK REVIEW

this one. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and
hope there will be more to come.
