FROM CHRISTMAS 2024 TO NEW YEAR 2025
Sunday 26 January: MANGAWHAI TORNADO
Devastation hit the Mangawhai area at 3am on Sunday
morning with many roofs lifted off homes, trees and
powerlines down .
Our Kaiwaka Volunteer Fire Brigade were out with a
large number of Emergency crews and with KDC,
FENZ, Northpower, Police and other agencies.
THANK YOU PAM and MARK
‘Kaiwaka Christmas Lights raised $3,315 for the Kaiwaka
Fire Brigade. Thank you to the brigade members who were
present on the nights and handed out stickers on Fire Safe
and Lollies for the children.
Thank you to Santa for your visits, thank you to Ramon and
Manprett for letting the people park at the Caltex forecourt
and your donation was much appreciated; the weather was
really good only had a couple of nights when there was bit
too much wind for the lights.
Thank you to all who visited, and your donations.
See you all this Christmas in 314 days for next display!’
Mark & Pam.

KAIWAKA
WEATHER
DECEMBER 2024
Here December has been very dry at
our place with a recording of only 41ml
of rain over 11 days.
We would see the clouds building up
and thinking we would get a good
dollop of rain but sadly it was not to be.
We had two days of 10ml of rain, but
they were 10 days apart, so by the next
day the sun would shine strongly and
dry it all up again. The wind through
the month of December, has been
relentless.
Derek in Hakaru recorded 56mm over
14 days for December.
The most rain recorded in the month of
December at our place, was in 2023
with 218.5ml over 11days.
The least recorded for December was in
2020 with only 34.5ml over 6 days.
The total rainfall at our place for the
year of 2024 was 1148.5mm, a
whopping 1734.5mm less than 2023.
Derek’s recording for the year of 2024
was 1195mm over 180 days..
~Take care all, Karen
At our house (down the Oneriri) the total
2024 rainfall was 888mms. Ed.
PLEASE FRIENDS
KEEP ON MOVING!
Kaiwaka
Scottish
Country
Dancers keep dancing
over summer
but mainly to see their friends in a
social setting. Yes, they know it’s good
for their brains and bodies, but that
falls into insignificance with the bonds
of friendship formed through this form
of social dancing.
Have you recently moved to the area
or found yourself with more time on
your hands? Then come over to the
Kaiwaka War Memorial Hall on a
Wednesday and try out if Scottish
Country Dancing is for you.
We meet at 9.45am until 12.00midday
on a Wednesday morning in the
Kaiwaka War Memorial Hall.
You don’t need a partner or special
equipment, just come along in soft,
comfortable shoes and join in the fun.
Your first visit is free. We have
dancers from Warkworth, Mangawhai
and Waipu so if you need to share
transport text or phone Elaine on
0274320032
or
Kaiwaka@dancescottish.org.nz
We will be dancing simple dances on
the 12th and 19th February in the
Kaiwaka Hall and look forward to
welcoming you into our friendly
supportive group. Think about it….
exercising without realising it whilst
having fun with lifelong friends.
Come on…. TRY IT OUT
COMINGS AND GOINGS
We said farewell and thanks to Jocelyn
last month, as she left the team to
concentrate on other tasks. This month
we've welcomed Karen H and Karin B
to the team in her place.
SUMMER READING PROGRAM
There are just a few days left for kids to
complete
the
Summer
Reading
challenge - it closes on Friday 31
January. Come in and pick up your pack
if you haven't already and complete the
challenges to enter and win prizes.

have been affected by this.

Books in Their Blood: Mary Egan Publishing
Mary Egan Publishing, a family-run
publishing house now based in
Northland, is rooted in a deep passion
for storytelling.
Originally established in Auckland,
the business has flourished in its rural
home, where it continues to help
authors bring their stories to life.
The family’s publishing legacy spans
generations. Mary Egan and her late
husband, Gerard Reid, founded Egan-
Reid Limited in the 1990s, pioneering
digital publishing in New Zealand.
Their
innovative
work
earned
widespread respect locally and
internationally, creating a foundation
that the next generation has proudly
built upon.
Mary
Egan
Publishing
was
established in 2010 under poignant
circumstances. On his deathbed,
Gerard wrote his daughter Sophia
(pictured) a business plan: work with
a small group of authors to produce
the best books possible, only work
with nice people, and take care of Mary. By April 2010, at the age of 22, Sophia
had lost her father. By August, she had left Pindar, the UK-
based printing company that had acquired Egan-Reid, and
launched Mary Egan Publishing, determined to carry out
Gerard’s vision.
“Dad’s advice shaped everything,” Sophia reflects. “He
made it clear that quality and kindness should guide our
work. And he was right.”
Within a year, the business grew enough to bring Mary on
board full-time. Another year later, Sophia’s sister, Anna,
joined the company from Penguin, where she had been an in
-house designer. Together, the family has built a company
that now publishes up to 30 books a year, carefully selecting
projects and clients that align with their values.
Sophia’s career reflects the deep family tradition of
publishing. In 2018, her contributions were recognised when
she was named Young Publisher of the Year at the
Booksellers NZ Industry Awards.
In 2022, Sophia and her husband James moved to Kaiwaka,
embracing rural life and the warmth of the community.
“We’ve met more neighbours here than we ever did in the
city,” Sophia says. “Moving to Northland has been the best
decision we’ve made.”
Mary Egan Publishing offers a comprehensive range of
services, from editing and design to printing and
distribution. The company specialises in memoirs,
children’s books, and coffee-table editions, approaching
each project with care to ensure the author’s voice shines.
Today, Mary Egan Publishing stands as a beacon for authors
seeking a personal touch and exceptional quality. From their
base in Northland, the family continues to celebrate the
transformative power of stories, carrying on a proud legacy
that has shaped New Zealand’s publishing landscape.

Rotary for February
2025
Even though our numbers
were not as great for our
closing night, as has been
the case in previous
years, we still had a
fantastic evening.
We had a Christmas Trivia quiz which
did have some obscure questions which
challenged most of us. Among our
guests was the new Principal at
Otamatea, Todd Malcom. Todd is
very supportive of the many initiatives
that Rotary runs for the youth. He has
expressed an interest in starting an
Interact Club at the High school. He
also spoke of RYPEN – Rotary Youth
Program of Enrichment – which is a
weekend leadership course aimed at
Year 12 and 13 students. Already we
are involved in RYDA – Rotary Youth
Driving Awareness and RYE – Rotary
Youth Exchange.
We
look
forward
with
eager
anticipation to hear from Jamie-Grace
about her 2024 sojourn in Belgium.
Because President Tim could not
separate the candidates for the
President’s Scholarship, he has
decided to award $500 to each
applicant – Annaliese Allen, Max
Bull and Willow Campbell. We look
forward to hearing what these young
people achieve in their future
endeavours.
Trevor Brljevich
We were saddened to lose an esteemed
community
member
in
Trevor
Brljevich, who became a Paul Harris
Fellow some years ago. This award is
given by Rotary for someone who has
given a great deal to their community,
and those of you who know Trevor will
agree that he was a worthy recipient.
Our Rotary year has begun with a
President’s BBQ, which is a low-key
way to start the year.
We will continue to meet on alternate
Tuesdays but unsure at time of printing
if the first meeting will be 28th January
or 11th February. There will be a
number of us helping in various
capacities at the Paparoa Show on the
1st February. This is a great chance for
us to work alongside a similar service
group, Paparoa Lions. Please don’t
hesitate to get in touch with any
Rotarian if you want to know more
about what we do. We are looking
forward to an exciting new year.
If you would like to know any more about
Rotary, please don’t hesitate to get in touch
with any Rotarian or give me a call – 021

ST VALENTINE’S DAY 2025
FRIDAY 14 FEBRUARY
Valentine's Day, also called Saint Valentine's
Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is celebrated
annually on February 14 in honour of one or two
early Christian martyrs named Saint Valentine.
Through later folk traditions, it has become a significant
cultural religious, and commercial celebration of romance
and love in many regions of the world.
While not a major feast of the Anglican
liturgical calendar, it has been celebrated for the past 1,529
years, since 496AD.
Valentine's Day was incorporated into the rituals of courtly
love in the 14th and 15th centuries, and flourished again in
the 19th century, when commercial printing of cards
democratised the celebration of Valentine's Day. The
practice of sending a card (ideally anonymously) to
someone you love, inviting them to be your valentine, was
brought to New Zealand by British settlers.
KAIWAKA GLASS
Welcome to Darryl and Lana who
have recently moved to Kaiwaka
from the Gulf Islands after spending
30 yrs glazing on Waiheke Island
and Great Barrier.
‘I have over 40 yrs in the glass and
Aluminium joinery industry and
carry most products with me which
means I can fix most things onsite
same day.
I am a NZ qualified Tradesman in
the flat glass trade but have worked
with many aluminium companies so
are able to fix most types of
windows and doors. After spending
many years on Waiheke raising 3
children one of which has now taken
over our glass business GlassMan
Waiheke Ltd., we are now looking
forward to being on a big Island
serving the Community. We love
fishing so happy to be between two
harbours and are also happy to
travel between both to provide a
great glazing service.’

It was in February 1867 when newly
married Emily Ann Dowson first
arrived in Kaiwaka with her husband,
Thomas. Emily was not a country girl
and had only been in New Zealand for 2
years. Born in Tottenham, England, in
1833, she had been employed as a
Governess in both London and
Auckland.
How did she feel seeing no shops or
houses, surrounded by the bush, the
tidal Kaipara creek and the hills? We
can guess she may have been very
grateful for the wedding present of two
heifers from her Auckland employer,
Alfred Buckland.
Thomas had been granted 40 acres (for
free - like many settlers) located on a
paper road extension of Hastie Lane,
west of Pukenui Road, which he’d
named “Heelyfield”.
Thomas had carpentry skills and built a
house using mill-sawn Coromandel
timber (he had worked there), a luxury
possibly funded by his participation in
the gold-rush at Driving Creek.
For Emily, domestication intruded
quickly. She had to set up a home from
scratch and motherhood arrived when
twin girls were born in October, eight
months after the marriage. Twins can
tend to be born early, and Thomas felt
need to spell it out in the newspaper
birth notice (squashing the opportunity
for gossip).
The Dowsons had eight children,
including two sets
of twins. Sadly,
three sons did not
reach adulthood,
and a fourth son
died as a soldier
in the Boer War.
It must have been
very disheartening
but despite this
Emily’s faith in
God
remained
strong. Over the
years,
Emily
contributed much
of her time and
skills
to
the
fledgling
communities
of
Kaiwaka and Hakaru.
She taught local children until a school
was opened in May 1870. Later, she
taught needlework at Kaiwaka school,
and Sunday school. Emily used her
nursing skills to help others in the
district.
Life wasn’t all washing for 7 children
by hand, cooking, attending the veggie
garden or churning the butter. There
were fun times too. Picnics were a big
part of local social life. Emily enjoyed
artistic pursuits such as painting and
poetry writing.
Twenty-seven poems written by Emily
still exist. Activities such as presenting
a song, a play, a speech, or poetry
recitations, playing an instrument, were
shared with the Mutual Improvement
Society or at local concerts, or with a
party of friends staying over for a week
or two.
Emily lived to the ripe old age of 91
and took joy in watching two
generations of her family grow up. She
saw a vast change in the social and
technological landscape of the world.
It’s hard to sum up a long life so
briefly. Emily was not one of a kind,
and we are all here because of strong,
brave, capable women nurturing our
family tree / whakapapa. We don’t
always know who they were but it’s
nice to pay homage to them.
