FEELINGS FOR LIFE TRACTOR TREK PASSES THROUGH KAIWAKA
Saturday 15 February, Kaiwaka had the privilege of welcoming the Feelings For Life Tractor Trek
2025 -photographed by Dianne, as it made its way from Auckland to Whangārei.
More than just a scenic journey, this trek is dedicated to raising funds and awareness for early
intervention in children’s mental wellbeing education across New Zealand.
On February 17, Grant McCallum (Northland MP) joined the launch and blessing of this year’s trek.
He had the opportunity to hear from the crew and Think and Be Me about the incredible work being
done to support tamariki mental health, particularly through the Rotary Te Tai Tokerau Tamariki
Mental Wellbeing Project, which has been making a meaningful impact in Northland since 2023.

WEATHER
JANUARY
The January report is going to be very
much like the December report as
there was not much rainfall in January.
At our place I recorded 106.5mm
over 12 days. A nice bit of dampness
in the middle of the month which had
the Brynderwyn waterfall flowing
nicely and the gardens and farms
appreciated the relief but then the rain
dried up and the waterfall is now back
to its usual trickle.
Derek recorded 121mm over 11 days.
In the last week of January I woke at
2.45am to the flash of many lightning
strikes but not hearing any thunder
associated
with
it
as
usual.
Unbeknown to me until a couple of
hours later that a tornado had
devastated a few homes and many
fences and trees in Mangawhai.
Apparently, it is a common thing with
tornadoes that you don’t get thunder
off the lightning. Something to do with
the sound being trapped in the vortex
of the tornado (well that’s my
understanding of it – I could be
wrong).
The highest rainfall recording I have
for January was in 2023 (of course)
with the horrendous amount of
603mm. The least recorded was in
2020 with only 9mm, closely
followed by 9.5mm in 2013.
Take care all, Karen.
January
2025
was
marked by cooler-than-
average temperatures across much of
the country, making it New Zealand’s
coldest January since 2017, according
to NIWA National Climate Centre’s
Monthly Climate Summary.
Among major centres, Auckland was
the warmest, Hamilton the driest,
Tauranga the sunniest, Dunedin the
coolest, and Christchurch the wettest
and least sunny.
A GIRLS
COMPLAINT
This is a fun little poem
about a young settler
girl’s frustration with a
rainy day while out
living in the bush,
which has kept her
cooped up inside. How
different the choices for
entertainment were 150
years ago!
By Emily Dowson
A Girls Complaint
Rain, rain patter, clatter, pour down
still
There’s rain enough upon the land
To drown a thousand hills,
A bush life is a merry life
But oh! it is a dreary life
upon a rainy day.
There’s father reads the news all day
What can he see in that,
I read the “Ladies Column”; down
And then I want a chat,
I like to tell them what I read
I dearly love a pun
There’s chess, and draughts, charades,
and scrabble
The column’s full of fun.
But mother works so hard all day
The boys are out to hunt for cows
They’ll soon be home wet through.
Aunt Tilly talks to mother
And mother talks to Aunt
how I would talk to father
But while he reads I can’t.
Sometimes my father reads aloud
That does not suit me quite
I hate to sit and listen
But could talk from morn till night.
I never did like sewing
And reading is as bad
When mother says, “ Now get a book”
It nearly drives me mad.
And there’s the dear old Dame you
know
Her maxims make me smile
I have to pay attention
But I’m laughing all the while.
I get so tired of making shirts
And darning stockings - phew
And knitting, I can knit and talk
But who can I talk to?
But here’s the cows and there’s the
boys
The rain they have enjoyed
If I like them would happy be
I needs must be employed.

GET WASHED:
INSIGHTS FROM YOUR
LOCAL PROFESSIONAL HOUSE WASHERS
When it comes to maintaining
the beauty and integrity of our
homes,
businesses,
or
community buildings, exterior
washing plays a crucial role. As
professional house washers, we
see firsthand the transformative
effects of a thorough exterior
clean.
Exterior washing extends the
lifespan of most building
materials. Algae, mould, dirt
and salt can deteriorate and
corrode surfaces. By regularly
washing these surfaces, you can
prevent premature aging and
extend their durability, saving money in the long run.
When collecting quality rainwater for drinking, it’s crucial to ensure that your
roof and gutters are clean and free flowing. We encourage you to make exterior
washing a regular part of your property maintenance routine and enjoy the
numerous benefits it brings.

DRIVING MENTORS
With the help of our Driving mentors,
we continue to have success in
enabling people to progress from their
Learners to their Restricted License.
Most of our candidates sit their license
in Dargaville but recently we have also
had people sitting in Whangarei,
Kerikeri and Warkworth.
A number of the Otamatea High
School Duke Of Edinburgh students
use these lessons, together with their
own driving log, to fulfil their Skill
section of this award. With school up
and running again (and remember,
these lessons are not just for school
students) we have a number wanting to
have training. However, we are very
short of Mentors. If you know of
anyone who would be willing to give
up even a half day a week to do this,
please tell them to call me (021

car is not dual controlled.

A reminder to book your tickets for the

my van, and I moved to Kaiwaka seven
years ago with my wife and teenage
daughter. With over 20 years of
experience in the flooring industry, I’ve had the privilege of
working on a wide variety of projects. I saw a need for
quality flooring services within the community and that’s
when I decided to start my business, Jansen Flooring.
We currently offer a mobile showroom where we come to
you, with a physical location coming soon.
With limited options locally, I wanted to provide people in
Kaiwaka and surrounding areas with a convenient, reliable,
and professional flooring service without the hassle of
traveling far to get it. I’m committed to delivering top-
notch work, and I take pride in helping my neighbours
create beautiful, functional spaces in their homes and
businesses.
At Jansen Flooring, it's not just about getting the job done;
it's about making sure every customer is happy with the
results. I work hard every day to ensure that each project is
completed to the highest standards and with a genuine focus
on customer satisfaction.
You can find out more at www.jansenflooring.co.nz,
searching Jansen Flooring on Facebook or call me on
021 241 5413.
I look forward to helping you achieve the floor of your
dreams.”

KAIWAKA ATHLETIC CLUB
We continue to provide opportunities for
young people to become more proficient in
athletics.
We have been very fortunate to receive
(courtesy of Athletics NZ) a Run, Jump,
Throw kit. See photo. Even though we have
a reciprocal arrangement with Otamatea for
the use of equipment we do not have enough, this kit will give us a wider range
of activities to offer, especially for the younger athletes. There are at least six of
most items, and the low hurdles will certainly be an asset for all ages.
The Club will run at Otamatea High Schol on a Wednesday night from 4.30 to
approx. 6pm, until the ending of daylight saving for the year. Come along and
check us out.
KAIPARA BASKETBALL REPORT:
The Kaipara Basketball Association has several exciting events coming up. The
Girls Only Skills Program kicks off on February 10, with sessions held on
Mondays in Dargaville and Tuesdays in Mangawhai for girls aged 9-15 to
develop their basketball skills. Miniball for young players in school years 2-6
also begins in February, with sessions on Mondays in Dargaville for years 3-6
and Tuesdays in Mangawhai for years 2-5, focusing on fundamental skills
through fun activities. The Kaipara Youth League starts on February 19 at
Otamatea and will run for eight weeks, featuring mixed teams in two age
brackets: Under 12s (born 2014-2016) and Under 14s (born 2012-2013), with
players able to form their own teams or request placement. Kaipara Basketball is
also seeking volunteers to support the sport as coaches, referees, managers,
fundraisers, and general helpers. Anyone passionate about basketball and
wanting to give back is encouraged to get involved. For more information or to
register, visit kaiparabasketball.com or email basketball.kaipara@gmail.com.

HAKARU PONY CLUB
Hakaru Pony Club, situated on
Settlement Road, has been going
since 1976. We cater for any riders
who can sit astride a saddle. We have
them start under 5 and are still there
75plus, and we have a lot of history
which we are very proud of. The Pony
Club Rallies cater for the Under 25
years old.
Our rallies started again on 12 February.
We have a lead rein class which starts at
4pm and the full rally starts at 5.30pm
until 7:15pm. This is every week while
school is on. We take a break in the
holidays. The coaches are all volunteers
and donate their time to teaching our
young riders the basics of looking after
their ponies and how to keep themselves
safe.
Pony Club is run under the English
riding techniques with a lot of success.
We also incorporate other riding styles
for fun, but as our curriculum is based
on Certificate levels, we pretty much
teach the riders to whatever level they
are ready for, to sit and pass their
certificates.
ADULT RIDE: We also have an active
adult ride which meets most weeks on a
Thursday evening. These groups are run
by different coaches who charge their
time. These groups teach the basics of
flat work, pole work, jumping and XC
techniques. Keep watching
the Hakaru FB page for
details of this.
We are also re-introducing
the Riders Without Horses
Program (began on12th of February
starting at 5.30pm). This will be run by a
volunteer and there may be the
opportunity to get to ride a pony but the
basics of how to look after one is taught
with the idea that once parents, and
riders, learn a bit more about how to
look after the pony and how much time
etc it takes to do this, then eventually the
riders will get to own their own pony.
We run various competitions at Hakaru
i.e. dressage, showjumping, Show
Hunter and ribbon days.
I believe we have some of the best
grounds in the north and although the
area is small, we do a lot on the grounds.
We also have an all-weather arena which
can be used all year round once you are
a member. We keep our membership
fees to a minimum, so it is not expensive
to join, and your membership lasts for a
full year, depending on when you join.
We do ask that each family donates time
to help with the many jobs that are
required, but it is usually a fun time and
a learning experience for everybody.
Our season goes from 1st September to
31st August.
One of the highlights of our branch is
our summer camp. Brilliant.
We are only a small branch with very
experienced coaches and would love to
have more members. So if you think this
might be for you and your horse crazy
children / or adults wanting to get their
confidence back – come along and see
us on Wednesday. We have a lovely
committee who would love to meet you
and welcome you on board. One of our
committee members dedicates herself to
ensuring we are all fed, and you can
purchase your dinner at the grounds.
