becoming the No 1 ranked Open shearer for the season.
Keeping the faith with the locals - Toa had his fifth win in a
row at the Warkworth A and P Show on Saturday16 March
(the arena commentary provided by his father, Mike
Henderson) and his 39th in Open finals dating back to 2019

several years in Australia.
It was also his ninth in 12 finals this season, and his sixth
consecutive Saturday triumph dating back to the Otago

Toa’s shearing prowess continues with a win in the Open at
Waitomo Caves Sports on Saturday, March 22.

KAIWAKA WEATHER
FEBRUARY
What amazing weather we have had this summer.
The rainfall however has not been much to write about. I am sure everyone’s
gardens and farms are suffering from the lack of rainfall.
At our house for February 2025 I recorded 61mm over 9 days.
Derek recorded only 36.5mm over 8 days.
It still astounds me how near Derek is to us yet how different the readings can be.
Derek’s highest daily rainfall recorded for February this year was 14mm.
I have only been keeping rainfall records since 2003 and in that time the highest
daily rainfall I have ever recorded was on the 25th February 2023 with
246mm when a weather bomb hit our area.
The most rainfall I have recorded for the month of February was in 2023
with a whopping 702mm (Cyclone Gabrielle) and the least recorded was in
2020 with only 7.5mm.
I noticed that at the beginning of the 3rd week of February the weather changed
and Autumn started to make its presence felt, with cooler mornings.
~Take care all, Karen
We got 12 mm over 4 days for February! Oneriri must be too far west! Ed.
CITIZENSHIP CEREMONY
Congratulations to local Kaiwaka Caltex business owners Raman Battu and
family who were recently sworn in as New Zealand Citizens by Mayor Craig
Jepson.
Raman has described his family’s journey to citizenship below.
“We would count ourselves fortunate that we are now citizens of New Zealand
officially. The citizenship ceremony was a delightful experience with everyone
saying a few words about themselves. Here's our story till date -
In 2015, we came from India for the sole purpose of visiting my in-laws' family
as we had not met for a few years since their migration to NZ.
Once here we travelled and saw the jaw dropping natural beauty of NZ both in
North and South Island. Interestingly, KAIWAKA was the first place we stopped
(while heading north) to refresh ourselves. Little did we know that this town
would eventually become our OWN town. We moved here in 2017 and got the
opportunity to serve the community since then. The community did not shy away
from accepting us as a part of their own, right from the initial days. Not only the
neighbours but our staff and local customers embraced us with open arms. Our
sons Rishi and Rabbi completed their schooling from Rodney College and found
their experience there to be a breeze too. At present they both are studying
Engineering in Unitech and University of Auckland. Looking forward to making
more long-lasting experiences in future.
Proud to make NZ our second home and proud to be KAIWAKIANS.”

YOUNG SCEATS AND SARGE
Northland’s Sheep Dog Trial Centre Championships
took place from 20th to 22nd February at the
Broadwood club in the Far North. It was a big
celebration at the club, not only as the centre
championships, arguably more importantly it was
the 100-year centennial of the club, only the fourth
club in the Northland Centre to celebrate the
milestone.
Fletcher Sceats saw great success at the trial with
his huntaway dog Sarge, winning their first centre
championships in the zig zag hunt event. Fletcher
spent the last few years working at Oneriri station in
Kaiwaka and is a member of the Molesworth Sheep
Dog Trial club based in Kaiwaka, where his
grandfather Bob Sceats is the patron. Fletcher is
involved with several of the local clubs in the area,
helping where he can at the Helensville and Rodney clubs in recent years.
Fletcher and Sarge have featured in a number of local trials over the past year,
with wins and places, but this is a first (hopefully of many) for the young dog
trialist. Fletcher was the youngest in the runoff (final), with some very skilled,
experienced, and well known trialists in the north, featuring, Grant West,
Murray Child, Scott McRae and Mike Moody. Fletcher and Sarge were
consistent with the highest points (for a local competitor) in the first round with
95 (out of 100) and only dropping half point in the runoff with 94.5.
In the heading events, Murray Child of the Maungakaramea club with heading
dog Brie took out the double, winning both the short head and yard, as well as
the long head run off.
Murray was well represented in the runoffs with huntaway
Chase getting third in the zig zag hunt and heading dog
Glen in second behind Brie in the short head.
The Northland centre in approximately halfway through
the season, with the more local trials yet to come, with
Rodney in late March and Molesworth in April.
If you’re interested in watching a trial locally, the
Molesworth SDTC event (75th Jubilee Trial) is on the 11th
and 12th April, 616 Oneriri Road, Kaiwaka.

JAIME
ON
EXCHANGE
During the past month
we have had some very
interesting
meetings.
During the first one, we
had
our
Exchange
student,
Jaime
Warrington-Grace, speak to us about
her sojourn in Belgium last year.
Obviously, this trip held both
challenges and highlights for Jaime but
she believes that it has enabled her to
learn more about herself and what she
would like to do in the future.
While Jaime was in Belgium she was
hosted by three different families, each
of which were quite different. By the
time she reached her third family, she
was becoming quite proficient in
French (which was just as well because
that family spoke mostly French.) Jaime
spent most of her time in Bastogne but
was able to
visit different
cities, along
with
other
exchange
students, each
month. Jaime
has decided
that
the
people
in
Belgium love
carnivals as
they
were
very frequent.
Extra
trips
arranged were
to Paris to see basketball at the Olympic
games, and just before she came home,
Jaime was hosted by the family of Lars
(who had been an Exchange student
from Switzerland at Otamatea in the
previous year). Jaime spent two weeks
in the Swiss Alps and thoroughly
enjoyed that trip.
Another highlight was her membership
of a local Scout group which had her
camping for a two-week period, in
which the Scouts were not able to use
any tools or manufactured materials to
create their environment.
Jaime believes that there have been
huge areas of personal growth which
include her becoming more independent
and has a different perspective on life.
Attached is a photo of Jaime’s jacket
covered in pins – these are collected by
swapping with other students from
many different countries. The back is
also very impressive.
In thanking the club for their support,
Jaime also mentioned her willingness to
lead an Interact group at Otamatea. This
is a group of 14- to 18-year-olds who
select their own leaders and decide
what activities they want to be involved
in, which may include fundraising but
can also involve community service.
We, as Rotarians are there to support
these young people and we are grateful
for the support we have been given by
the
Principal, Mr Todd Malcolm in
enabling this to happen. We are very
excited about the establishment of this
group and look forward to ways in
which we can work together.
We are now looking forward to an
exciting new chapter in our Club, so
watch this space. If you would like to
join us, don’t hesitate to get in touch
with me

The Molesworth Sheep Dog Trial Club (SDTC)
celebrates 75 years of running sheep dog trials in our
region this April. The annual club trial is held, over
two days, where trialist’s run their heading and
huntaway dogs over the three courses, in four separate
events under NZSDTA rules: Class I – Long Head,
Class II – Short Head and Yard, Class III Zig Zag
Hunt, Class IV Straight Hunt.
For many, the name Molesworth is better associated
with a station in the South Island, than part of the
Kaipara District, unless you’re familiar with
Molesworth Drive in Mangawhai. Molesworth was an
area from the coast and beach, and upriver, including
Moir’s Point and back in 1949 the club was aptly
named after the region.
The club was founded in 1949 by two local
Mangawhai farmers (Wallace Hastie and Jack Wharf),
running their first trial on the Hastie farm in 1950 in
Mangawhai (on what is now The Sanctuary, Robert
Hastie Drive), then shifting to the Wharf brother’s
property the following year (Bream Tail Farm,
Tangaroa Road). In 1966 due to dwindling sheep
numbers and space, the club relocated to its present venue, 616 Oneriri Road,
Kaiwaka, to the farm then owned by Jim Morrison and our present Patron Bob
Sceats. Now owned by the Paton family.
Over the 75 years the club has been running, the committed volunteers have been at
its core, ensuring a well-run trial each year on the Northland calendar, many who are
certainly not all dog trialists, but enjoy those who are. Local names like Wharf,
Hastie, Cullen, Balderston, Ries, Hargreaves, Sceats, Whitehead, McCabe, Gilligan
and McRae have featured in the club’s history, up to the present day. The event is
more than the two days, with planning, set up and pack down needing numerous
hands (and dogs), with over 30 volunteers giving their time to assist every year.
The event is run through rain and shine, and over the club’s history it has only been
reported to have missed one year of trials, which wasn’t due to floods or droughts,
but due to covid restrictions. Without the generous support of the landowner and use
of sheep from Oneriri Station, the sport wouldn’t have been able to continue.
The Molesworth trial attracts visitors
(both trialist and non-trialist) from across
the North Island, being near to the end of
the dog trial calendar, it can be a trial to
earn last minute points to qualify for the
season’s championship. The convenient
location, just a few minutes off state
highway one, as well as the warm club
hospitality, mean there is often
visitors, friends and family watching this
sport for the first time.
If you’re interested, please come along
and watch, it’s a great spectator sport, and
they’ll be plenty of people to explain what
you’re watching. Join us in celebrating 75
years of sheep dog trialling for the club.

THE BATTLE OF TE IKA A RANGANUI
The 200 year commemoration of the Battle was on 15 March at the battle site -
the pictures show the early morning and dawn on the hillsides. Then it was back
at the Kaiwaka Sports Complex - it was truly a time to remember.
Much has been written on this time in the history of Kaiwaka -see pages 2-6 of
“Centennial of Kaiwaka Ratau O Kaiwaka 1859-1959”
From the Daily Southern Cross, 31
December 1868, Page 4 :
‘February 1825, the Battle of Te Ika-a-
Ranganui saw Ngāpuhi, led by Hongi
Hika, defeat Ngāti Whātua near
Kaiwaka, resulting in a significant loss
of life for Ngāti Whātua, including the
death of their famous fighting chief
Murupaenga.
The battle marked a turning point in
the conflict between
Ngāpuhi and Ngāti
Whātua, with Ngāpuhi
gaining revenge for
their earlier defeat at
Moremonui. The battle
was part of the Musket
Wars, a period of
conflict
in
New
Zealand where Māori
tribes clashed, often
using
European
muskets.’

THE ODE OF REMEMBRANCE
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning,
We will remember them.
We will remember them.
The Ode of Remembrance has been recited to commemorate wartime service and
sacrifice since 1921.
The Ode is the 4th stanza of the poem For the Fallen by Laurence Binyon,
pictured. The poem was first published in British newspaper The Times on 21
September 1914 and later appeared in many anthologies of war verse.
In 1919, Binyon’s poem was selected to accompany the unveiling of the London
Cenotaph and was adopted as a memorial tradition by many Commonwealth
nations. Laurence Binyon was an English academic and poet. He worked as a
medical orderly with the Red Cross on the Western Front during World War I.
By the time Binyon's poem was published in The Times, the British
Expeditionary Force had already experienced devastating losses on the Western
Front. Reading a poem at a commemorative service can help the audience to
understand the wartime experience of service men and women.

COORDINATION REDUCES PEST
ANIMALS
Neighbour action is succeeding with
the possum and introduced pest prob-
lems on Oneriri peninsula.
The regional council supported drive
to knock out possums on the peninsu-
la has stepped up with traplines laid
in the buffer zone east of Oneriri Sta-
tion and Puketōtara. Predator Free Kaipara working through
Te Uri O Hau Environs has completed laying trap lines in
the buffer zone. The results are available through maps dis-
played on the freely available Trap.nz website. Environs co-
ordinator Tahiroa Bishop places cameras on traplines to rec-
ognise animals which avoid traps.
Landowners involved with the Kaira Oneriri Biosecurity
Area have been working with neighbours to make traps, poi-
son and ammunition available to reduce costs. As a result of
these neighbourly efforts, fewer pests are being seen on the
roads and animal populations appear to be more in balance.
The initiative is supported by Northern Regional Council
whose biosecurity officer Pete Graham appreciates local
landowner efforts to address the threat to native species from
possums, stoats, weasels, rats, feral cats and pigs.
Some concentrations are in native forest blocks under QE2
Trust which Pete Graham says lacks budget for pest control.

A well-known quote emphasizing
the importance of Easter in
relation to Christmas is: "There
would be no Christmas if there
had not been Easter".
The Significance of Easter:
This quote, often attributed to Gordon
B. Hinckley, highlights that the
resurrection of Jesus Christ, celebrated
during Easter, is the foundation upon
which the meaning of Christmas, the
celebration of his birth, rests.
The Atonement:
The quote underscores the significance
of Jesus's sacrifice and atonement,
which is central to the Christian faith
and the meaning of Christmas.
The full story:
The birth of Jesus in Bethlehem is the
preface to the story, the three-year
ministry of the Master is prologue. The
magnificent substance of the story is
His sacrifice, the totally selfless act of
dying in pain and dishonour on the
Cross of Calvary to atone for the sins of
all of us.
EASTER EGGS
Eggs represent new life and rebirth, and
it's thought that this ancient custom
became a part of Easter celebrations. In
the medieval period, eating eggs was
forbidden during Lent (the 40 days
before Easter) so on Easter Sunday,
tucking into an egg was a real treat!
And still is!!
What did the kids do when their treats
were all hidden on Easter morning?
They demanded an eggsplanation !
