On Friday 11th and Saturday 12th April, the
Molesworth Sheep Dog Trial Club (SDTC) celebrated
an impressive 75 years since its first trial was held in
Mangawhai. The annual two-day event took place at the
club’s current grounds on Oneriri Road, hosted on land
generously provided by the Paton family.
The club was originally founded in 1949 by local farmers
Wallace Hastie and Jack Wharfe, with the first trial held
in 1950 on the Hastie farm now known as The Sanctuary on
Robert Hastie Drive. The event moved the following year to
Bream Tail Farm, owned by the Wharfe family, before
settling in its current location in Kaiwaka in 1966, thanks to
the support of landowners Jim Morrison and now-patron
Bob Sceats.
As often happens in Molesworth’s storied trial history, the
first day brought much-needed rain, but it cleared to
sunshine for Saturday, encouraging a strong turnout of
spectators and supporters - many new to the sport. Judges
Bob Nelley, Barney Robinson, and Craig Lugtigheid were
pleased with the quality of sheep supplied by Oneriri
Station. 30 huntaway runs and around 60 heading dogs
participating, the atmosphere was steady and spirited, with
ample time to enjoy the club’s hospitality.
Several local competitors achieved impressive results across
the heading and huntaway events. Standouts included Ben
Haddon, Scott McRae, Fletcher Sceats, Hannah and Ed
Long, and Peter Walker.
A highlight of this year’s event was the presentation of the
inaugural David Hargreaves Award, initiated by Mary
Hargreaves in memory of her late husband. The award
honours young and upcoming trialists, with Grady Collis its
first recipient.
A special moment came with the awarding of life
membership to Robert Whitehead, whose lifelong
dedication to the club began as a child attending trials with
his mother Ilona. A constant and reliable presence since the
1970s, Robert was praised as a committed volunteer,
excellent
stockman,
and indispensable club
member.
Throughout its 75-year
history, the club has
been sustained by an
extraordinary
volunteer base. Names
such
as
Wharfe,
Hastie,
Cullen,
Balderston, Ries,
Hargreaves,

McCabe, Gilligan,
and McRae are
woven through the
club’s
legacy.
More

30

Patron Bob Sceats shared fond memories of the club’s early
days and its move to Oneriri Road, acknowledging the
landowners whose generosity has kept the club running
since 1966.
A huge thank you goes to the club’s sponsors and
supporters - without whom this milestone and the sport
itself could not thrive. See page 3.
A resounding success, the 75th Molesworth Sheep Dog Trial sets
the tone for a strong showing by members at the upcoming North
Island and New Zealand Championships in May. Safe travels and
good luck to all!

ABOUT TOWN
WELL DONE Toa Henderson on being selected with Jack Fagan for the
Wools of New Zealand Shearing tour which will comprise at least six shearing
test matches across four countries in the UK - congratulations!
Congratulations to the local Molesworth Sheep Dog Club on reaching 75
years of successful trialing. Of note the Bugle’s Tony first competed on the
Hastie/Wharfe grounds in the early 1960s and became the only competitor still
trialing to compete on the Oneriri grounds where he and Dora gained a third
place in the shorthead and yard!

WEATHER
MARCH
March was a lovely, warm and mild
month.
I feel that Autumn kicked in, in the
third week of February, with cooler
mornings and nights. The deciduous
trees are changing quite rapidly but our
Poplar trees are dropping their leaves
faster than most other trees.
At our place I recorded 22.5ml of rain
over 7 days.
Derek recorded 21ml over 7 days. The
highest daily amount that Derek
recorded was 7ml whereas I recorded
7.5ml, lol!
The highest rainfall for March that I
have recorded was in 2007 when we
got 362ml.
The lowest recording for March was
in 2005 with 13.5ml recorded.
As I write this, it is really windy and
wet outside as the beginnings of
Tropical Cyclone Tam hits New
Zealand.
Take care all, Karen.
Childhood Happy Hours
Oh come to the woods with me
My little sisters three,
Sweet flowers are springing everywhere
Come into the woods with me.
The birds are so happy and gay
Singing far in the woods away,
And flowers as grow so sweet you know
Do come to the woods to day.
Thus sung a fair-haired boy
With a voice so full of glee,
Ever anon as he tript along
Come into the woods with me.
And soon did the trio meet
Their little brother sweet,
And they went to the wood where nature
good
Strewed flowers beneath their feet.
Now here dear Lizzie see
Are garlands one, two, three,
And Millie and you and Annie too
Must make a wreath for me.
And soon the loving hands
Entwined a wreath so rare,
May lillies, and bells, and pimpernels
Around his golden hair.
And they merrily danced along
All singing in childish glee,
Here nature is gay in the woods away
In the wood, in the woods are we.
Dear child may you always be
And your sisters three,
As pure as the day that you tript away
Singing, come to the woods with me.

A note of appreciation ~
I just have to recommend Mike's Autos
(behind Twinkle Towing) in Kaiwaka
for your next warranty of fitness.
I took my car in there thinking it would
fly through (as it usually does when I
take it to VTNZ) but Mike must be
even more observant than the VTNZ
inspectors because a number plate light
needed replacing (I got about 20 from
Temu for the price of 1 here at "Super
Expensive" where I've stopped buying
car parts). No problem. Easy to replace
so I put 2 new ones in. Then Mike
found a tiny (9mm) rust hole in the
firewall on the passenger side. I'm
guessing that would have been there
unseen for previous WoF inspections
but Mike's keen eyesight doesn't miss a
thing. So, 2 things it failed on!! I lifted
the bonnet and asked a friend who is a
retired VTNZ inspector if he could
find the hole. I told him where it was,
but he couldn't find it until I pointed it
out to him. He just laughed and said
we'd probably just tell you to get it
repaired before the next WoF.
So, trust me, if you want a more than
thorough WoF inspection take your
vehicle to Mike's Autos, Kaiwaka. He
will make sure your vehicle is the
safest one on the road!!

KAIWAKA LANTERN FESTIVAL
A mid-winter fun day for all the family!
The festival kicks off at 3pm with a range of activities taking place around the Kaiwaka sports grounds. And is scheduled
for the week prior to Matariki. The lantern parade around the village and the after-dark fire-based activities are directly
associated with Matariki themes celebrating light and regeneration.
Events cater to people of all ages: Treasure hunt; gumboot tossing competition; egg toss & catch; 3-legged races. New to
2025: East versus West Tug of War! Music by Happy Fish; food services and bar available.
The Lantern Parade begins at 5:30pm - the route runs about 1.5km around the village with a mid-point refreshment stop at
Eutopia Café; all participants then return to the pavilion for the judging of lanterns. The fun continues into the night
roasting marshmallows over braziers.
See www.lanternfestival.nz or Facebook: Kaiwaka Lantern Festival 2025
The Kaiwaka Lantern Festival is a Kaiwaka Can initiative designed to meet the mission "Making Kaiwaka an even better place to live."
All net receipts from the Festival will be applied toward community improvement projects: for 2025, the construction of a skatepark for Kaiwaka.

INTERACT CLUB
Last month our focus was on Jaime,
our overseas Exchange student for last
year and she has successfully gathered
a group of Otamatea High Students
together to form the Interact club that
was spoken about. As mentioned
previously, this Club is student led
(with the support of a staff member) so
we eagerly await to hear about their
plans to move forward for the rest of
the year.
MCSWEENEY BROS
Late in March we had the McSweeney
Bros provide a concert at the Country
Club. Because Marian Burns was
overseas, Paddy, Alastair and Eddy had
the skills of Jono Loney who not only
played the Irish whistle and the violin,
but also the mandolin, which he
mastered with incredible skill. While
the crowd was smaller than last time,
all present were able to enjoy not only
traditional dancing but also line
dancing. Once again, Jane and her
team in the kitchen provided a very
good meal to all who wanted it.
DUFFY BOOKS
We have provided funding for Duffy
books at Tinopai, for some years. This
scheme, initiated by Alan Duff aims at
putting books in homes for students.
These students can choose their own
two books from a very substantial
catalogue. Gael and I were fortunate to
attend the recent presentation (pictured
below), the format for which was quite
different from previous ones. On other
occasions, there have been a group of
young people acting and the very
strong message is the importance of
reading.
This year we had Kenape
doing a presentation with
music and song. He
currently runs a Music
Therapy and Mentoring
program, and he was able
to testify to the youngsters
about how reading is an
important part of helping him with his
music creation. Reading helped him
increase his vocabulary skills as an
artist and he was able to show the
students how he was now able to
convey his feelings through the lyrics
and music he composed. As part of this
Kenape encouraged the youngsters to
make up songs about themselves.
MANGAWHAI
and
MAUNGATUROTO ROTARY
As both Mangawhai and Maungaturoto
Rotary clubs meet on the same night,
we often don’t hear about each other’s
work in the community. Just recently
we were fortunate to have Mark
Bygrave visit us and he was telling us
that they will soon have three new bus
shelters erected in the village. They
have recently had the prize-giving for
the sailing club, which operates in
daylight saving time. This group has
been a huge focus for
the club since its
inception. This has
been so successful
that a group of
parents may now be
taking responsibility
for the running of the
Club.

It's been a while since you heard from
me, so there's a bit of catching up to
do...
COMINGS AND GOINGS
We said farewell and thanks to Jocelyn
in December, as she left the team to
concentrate on other tasks. In January
we welcomed Karen H and Karin B to
the team in her place.
TECHNOLOGY CHANGES
Many thanks to Kaipara District
Council for the new computer and
scanner that were supplied recently.
We're now up to date with a Windows
11 machine, and a more user-friendly
scanner.
A change in
how new books
are processed
means we are
now putting the
library
bar
codes on the
front of books,
instead of on
the back. It's
taking all of us
a little time to
get used to this,
but
we
are
getting there.
BOOK REVIEWS
I've read so many good books since
you last heard from me! Rather than
pick out one to
tell you about,
I'll give you
some
quick
suggestions...
On
the
paranormal
front, you may
like
The
October Daye
series
by
Seanan
McGuire, the
City Between
series by WR
Gingell, and
the
Myrtlewood Mysteries series by Iris
Beaglehold.
Science fiction readers may enjoy
World Walkers by Neal Asher, and
Walkaway by Cory Doctorow.
Mystery/thriller readers may like to try
I Died at Fallow Hall by Bonnie
Burke-Patel, the Martin Hench series
by Cory Doctorow, Murder By
Candlelight by Faith Martin, and The
Body on Scafell Pike by SJ Brooke.
I have read more! Too many to
mention here. If you want more, see
the
reviews

ANZAC DAY HAKARU 2025
A TIME OF
REFLECTION
Photo left: Kaiwaka School
pupils Awana, Tyrene,
Skye and Mahia laying a
wreath at Hakaru RSA this
morning at the ANZAC
day service.
The parade marchers were
piped in by Piper Ian
Blakeley,
then

This year the address was
given
by

this time.
Among those laying wreaths was a niece of Barney

Panapa Hepi, 25871, served in WWII. He was single,
working as a labourer. His enlistment address Port Albert,
Kaiwaka. Panapa enlisted as a Private with the Second New
