WEATHER
APRIL
April started out with 2 fine days but
that was to change in a big way. The
next three days were very wet giving us
97.5ml.
One wet day then another 3 wet days. 2
more dry days then another wet day
before the last day without moisture for
the rest of the month.
17 more damp or very wet days
followed.
From the 16th to the 19th we had
howling winds and a thunderstorm that
was felt and heard from Kaitaia to
South Auckland, giving us another
104mm.
For the month of April I recorded a
total of 357ml over 24 days.
Derek in Hakaru recorded 334ml over
26 days.
The highest recording of rain for the
month of April at our place was
224.5ml recorded in 2017.
The least rain recorded for the month of
April at our place was 28.5ml recorded
in 2012.
It is still very warm, so the grass is
growing rather quickly.
Until next month, stay safe,
Karen

INTERACT
During
As
mentioned
last
month students at
Otamatea
High
were forming an
Interact
group,
which gives them a
chance to complete community
service in areas they are agreed
upon. This group has now
selected their office bearers and
are
in
the
process
of
brainstorming
the
type
of
activities they would like to be
involved in, so watch this space.
LE QUESNOY
A highlight for us during the past
month has been a talk given to us
by Sir Lockwood Smith on the
establishment of the NZ Liberation
Museum (Te Arawhata – “ascent to
freedom) in Le Quesnoy, Northern
France, at a cost of $16m, which
opened in 2023. Take a moment to look
through
the
website
<nzliberationmuseum.com>. Lockwood
spoke of the history of this walled
community over a number of centuries,
culminating with the German invasion
early in 1914. On 7 November 1918,
this community was liberated by 140
NZ soldiers (90 of whom perished), but
none of the 3,000 civilians were killed.
Even Weta workshops have been
involved, and they have constructed a
larger-than-life soldier which is on
display there.
While Sir Lockwood’s speech was well
received, we were also able to present
him with a Paul Harris Fellow award,
which is the highest award that can be
given in Rotary. In receiving this, Sir
Lockwood mentioned that he really
appreciated being recognized in this
way in his local community. (Pictured
Sir Lockwood with Alex Tetzner). If you
go into our local RSA, ask to see the
memorabilia that has been given to
Maungaturoto in relation to Le
Quesnoy.
ROTARY YOUTH
We are in the process of being involved
with two more Rotary Youth exchange
students, one incoming in July and one
outgoing in January. This is a great way
for the young people to be part of a
culture different from their own. We are
looking for someone to host Alina (the
incoming person) over the Christmas
break. If you would like to know more
about this, don’t hesitate to call me on
021 142 0357 and I will get details to
you. Penny, the outgoing student in
2026 is fundraising by cleaning
windows – Monday after school and
Sundays. If you want her details, please
also call me as above.
“CANS FOR A CAUSE”
From the 9th to the 16th June you will
notice we are involved in a nationwide
promotion – “Cans for a Cause” for
which we are seeking donations of non-
perishable items which will in turn be
distributed to local foodbanks. If you
see these signs, please consider adding
at least one grocery item to your weekly
shopping, which can then be added to
the collection box.
NORTHLAND
COMMUNITY
FOUNDATION
On Thursday 29th June, we will have
Jane Stearns (and possibly Richie Guy)
giving us a presentation from the
Northland Community Foundation.
They do have a funding round open
until 8th June so go to their website
northlandcommunityfoundation.org.nz
if you think you may be eligible.

OTAMATEA HAWKS
Hawks president, Beven Thomas
presents the celebratory caps to Michael
Tovine for 300 games on the field for
Otamatea and Mike Peeni for. 100
games as Hawks coach.
1995: The Launch of
Our New Image
Otamatea Rugby's new
image was launched by
Mayor Peter Brown at
the Kaiwaka Sports Complex on 30th
March, 1995, when he unveiled the
HAWK - following the welcome by Jim
Connelly. Supporter Club members
received their new polo shirts - white
with distinctive green stripes and the
new Hawk logo.
WHY THE HAWK?
We wanted a bird or animal that was
living, local, strong, even predatory -
that was easy to identify with.
Also the hawk and the eagle are
important birds in Ngatiwhatua history/
legends. One legend is of Kaahu, the
hawk, and Hokioi, the eagle...
References: Alan Nopera, Ngatiwhatua,
carver, Auckland New Venture Trust
Mr Hawke, Ngatiwhatua te Orakei
Trust Board; Tu Tangata Magazine -
article by Alan Taylor; Harpogomis -
article Waikato University.
And so THE HAWK met the
requirements and with the initials of
Otamatea Rugby Club - ORC - our
hawk had a name!
THE BRANCHES OF KAURI
These have been retained in our insignia
~ exhibiting our relationship as (l) a part
of Northland Rugby, whose crest has
the kauri tree, and (2) as part of
Otamatea identifying with the Otamatea
Kauri Museum and Otamatea High
School, who also have the kauri branch
logo.
THE GREEN and WHITE STRIPES
Were first worn by Otamatea Sub Union
121 years ago - from 1904 to 1966, and
then reappeared as Otamatea Club in
1988 when Eastern and Maungaturoto
Clubs joined to become a strong force
in Southern Zone, Northland Auckland
rugby.

MATARIKI
Matariki is the Pleiades star cluster and a celebration of its first
rising in late June or early July. The rising marks the beginning
of the new year in the Māori lunar calendar.
Historically, Matariki was usually celebrated for a period of
days during the last quarter of the moon of the lunar month
Pipiri (around June). The ceremony involved viewing the
individual stars for forecasts of the year to come, mourning the
deceased of the past year, and making an offering of food to
replenish the stars. Some Māori use the rise of Puanga (Rigel)
or other stars to mark the new year.
Celebration of Matariki declined during the 20th century, but
beginning in the early 1990s it underwent a revival. Matariki
was first celebrated as an official public holiday in New
Zealand on 24 June 2022. Ref. Wikipedia
Kia Ora my name is Kim, and I am the HIPPY Coordinator with Great Potentials
Foundation for the Kaipara District. I relocated to the Kaipara over 5 years ago
with my young family and have enjoyed our change in lifestyle from urban to
rural. I am qualified in Early Childhood Education with many years of experience
with all age groups.
HIPPY (Home Interaction Programme for Parents and Youngsters) is a
FREE home-based learning programme which has been designed to support
parents to prepare their children for success in education. Parents are given week
ly workbooks with activities to do with their child at home for 10-15 minutes a
day, 5 times per week. The HIPPY curriculum is designed and linked to Te
Whāriki and the New Zealand Curriculum. The workbooks and activities develop
both the cognitive and non-cognitive skills that are essential for children to be
come competent and confident learners.
Another aspect of our programme that we love is our whānau
hui where we come together as a HIPPY community to meet
other whānau who are also on the programme, learn some
new skills and provide a space for our Tamariki to play. At
the end of Term 1 HIPPY Kaipara hosted an Easter Egg
Hunt at the Sports Pavilion where our Kaiwaka whānau
came together for some crafts, a bite to eat and an Easter Egg
Hunt. We had a splendid time and look forward to our next
whānau hui.
WHO CAN SIGN UP?
• Children from 2 - 5 years old
• Children who do not attend Kindy, Kohanga or Early
Childhood Centre more than 8-10 hours a week
• Children on a waiting list for an ECE service

KAIWAKA LANTERNS
Get your LED tealight "candle" from 4Square in Kaiwaka and
make a gold coin donation to our Kaiwaka Festival.
These candles are perfect for the lanterns you're making for the
lantern parade at the Kaiwaka Lantern Festival on Sat. 14 June
(https://www.lanternfestival.nz). They are battery powered and
last for many hours, after which you can always just insert a new battery. We're
told they even "flicker" like flame-based candles... and emit a warm light, but of
course no heat. Lantern festival workshop to be held will be held on Saturday,
7th June from 2 - 4 pm at War Memorial Hall.

KAIWAKA LIBRARY
JIGSAWS!
Looking for something to do on a cold winter's day? We
have a selection of jigsaws in our library for you to choose
from. The new ones are on the new bookshelves in the main
room, and there are others in another room - just ask at the
counter if you need directions.
GAMES AND MORE!
And we have games, crafts, and other things to keep you
busy, too, in the Tutu Collection. See the boxes on the top
shelf of the new bookshelves for the full range. We keep a
couple of the more popular items on our shelves - when
they're not out on loan, they're quite popular! - and the others
have to be sent to us, so a hold needs to be placed first.
You can place a hold yourself at Enterprise* or the library
app, or you can ask us to do it for you. Search the catalogue
(in Enterprise or the app) for 'tutu collection' (without the
quote marks, capitals don't matter) to find the full range in
our "collection of things".
BOOK REVIEWS
I've read two excellent science fiction books recently, and
can't choose between them to pick one here...
Walkaway by Cory Doctorow: "Hubert
was too old to be at that Communist party.
But after watching the breakdown of mod-
ern society, he really has nowhere left to be
- except amongst the dregs of disaffected
youth who party all night and heap scorn
on the sheep they see on the morning com-
mute. After falling in with Natalie, an ultra-
rich heiress trying to escape the clutches of
her repressive father, the two decide to give
up fully on formal society—and walk
away..."
I didn't know when this was first published until after I'd
finished reading it and was surprised to find that it was as
long ago as 2017. Just as the orange man was starting his
first term of presidency, and before the current madness we
find ourselves in - but it felt like an antidote to what's going
on now, or at least something to make you think about what
might be, with hope, even before you get to the bits men
tioned in the description about "beating death". I found my
self drawn into the book and wanted to sit down and read
more than I have in recent times. This man is fast becoming
a new favourite author of mine.
Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir:
"Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a des-
perate, last-chance mission - and if he fails,
humanity and the earth itself will perish.
Except that right now, he doesn't know that.
He can't even remember his own name, let
alone the nature of his assignment or how to
complete it. All he knows is that he's been
asleep for a very, very long time. And he's
just been awakened to find himself millions
of miles from home, with nothing but two
corpses for company. His crewmates dead,
his memories fuzzily returning, Ryland realizes that an impossible
task now confronts him. Hurtling through space on this tiny ship,
it's up to him to puzzle out an impossible scientific mystery-and
conquer an extinction-level threat to our species. And with the
clock ticking down and the nearest human being light-years away,
he's got to do it all alone. Or does he?"
Wow! This is Andy Weir's 3rd novel, and he just keeps get
ting better with each one. (You may be more familiar with
his first book "The Martian", which was made into a movie
starring Matt Damon.) This gets a rare 5 stars out of 5 from
me. The book is at Dargaville Library, so you'll need to
place a hold on it to have it sent to Kaiwaka for you to bor
row.
Both books were easy reads - you can't say that about all SF
books; some need a lot of concentration to get into their
worlds. So don't be put off by that genre label if you're look
ing for a bit of adventure, and something different to what
you usually choose. See you in the library ~Wendy

50 YEARS
A Kaiwaka Clothing began in
Dargaville as a humble saddlery
business in 1975 has grown into an
industry-leading wet-weather clothing
manufacturer.
In December 1975, the business
relocated to Kaiwaka, operating out of
a neighbour’s shed with minimal
facilities.
Determined to make their mark, they
put up a sign on State Highway 1 -
“Kaiwaka Saddlery” - and quickly
gained recognition in the local
community.
By 1976, they expanded into canvas
covers and trampolines, using the motto
“Canvas and Leather - they go
together”.
Over the years, the company evolved
from
saddlery
into
wet-weather
clothing manufacturing.
By 1984, they had outgrown their
facilities and purchased a 10-hectare
property on SH1, transforming it into a
purpose-built factory. A year later, they
fully
transitioned
into
Kaiwaka
Clothing, focusing solely on durable,
high-quality wet-weather gear.
Much of Kaiwaka Clothing’s success is
attributed to its founder, Ross Stewart -
affectionately known by many as “Mr
Ross”.
To support those working in harsh
environments,
Kaiwaka
Clothing
introduced a free repair service on all
Kaiwaka products, ensuring that their
customers could keep farming without
disruption.
The late 1990s and early 2000s brought
challenges, but in 2013, after further
years of steady growth, Kaiwaka
moved into a state-of-the-art facility,
significantly increasing production
capacity and efficiency.
The significance of 50 years in
business, had been likened to 200
seasons of caring for farmers - four
very distinct seasons every year, with
different
weather
patterns
and
challenges.
From a small-town saddlery to an
internationally
recognised
brand,
Kaiwaka Clothing’s journey is a
testament to the power of Kiwi
ingenuity and determination.

OUR CROPS
Note from Sharon: This poem was
published
in
the
Centennial of Kaiwaka
book published in 1959
was
written
by
a
Kaiwaka early settler
Emily Ann Dowson,
pictured, in 1869. It
sounds very English to
but the early settlers up
and down the Kaipara were trying to
grow crops of wheat and the like on
their hard earned cleared land of broken
in from the bush.
Our Crops
The sod is turned, the seed is cast,
The rest we leave to God, and ask
That He may bless with kindly showers,
And sanctify these crops of ours,
And when the sun, with scorching rays,
The tender plants progression stays,
Then send refreshing dews around
To satisfy the parched ground.
So flourish every farmer’s field,
And let the earth her increase yield,
That creatures may rejoice to see
Their daily bread supplied by Thee.
Thus as we toil, and do our best,
So early rise, so late take rest,
Hoping to make, as season goes,
Our bush, to blossom as a rose,
And as with tardy steps we creep,
And sometimes sing, and sometimes
weep,
Over losses, and the like, we pray,
Give us enough, from day to day.
So bless our home, our flocks and field,
And let our crops abundance yield,
By day, by night, protect from harm,
Bless our new country, Queen and
farm.
