COMMUNITY RECOGNISES
TOA’S SUCCESS
On Friday 30th May a special evening was held at the KSA
for Toa Henderson celebrating his shearing success, which
includes winning the 2025 Golden Shears and the NZ
Championship.
KSA President Lish Reyolds welcomed the
large crowd and Toa’s family and those
who came to honour his success plus the
many shearers, including Sir David Fagan
and his son Jack. Toa will be representing
NZ and travelling overseas with team
member Jack Fagan, his father Mike and Sir
David and manager Neil Fagan.
Toa and Jack have arrived in the UK ready
for the first of six test matches in a four-
nations tour starting at the Lochearnhead
Shears in Scotland this weekend (28 June) - with the
Lochearnhead Shears’ Scottish blackface sheep, known as
the “blackies”. They will shear against England at the Great
Yorkshire Show at Harrogate on July 9, France at the
French Shears in Boussac on July 13, and then a three-
match series against Wales, with tests at
Residents living in and around Kaiwaka
gathered at the Kaiwaka Sports Association
on the afternoon of Saturday 14th June to
celebrate the village’s annual lantern festival.
Fine weather meant that the “inside games”
were not needed and instead afternoon
activities included a gumboot tossing competition, three-
legged races, and the ever-popular (if messy) egg-toss-and-
catch competition (sponsored this year by Absolute
Concrete, Kaiwaka’s own hardware store).
The games culminated with the inaugural East-versus-
West tug of war in which teams drawn from people living
on the east and on the west side respectively of the state
highway faced off against each other in a contest of strength
and will. The contest this year proved less than equal, with
the East side team decisively proving its superiority (this is
to be memorialised in a trophy displayed proudly at the
Kaiwaka 4 Square). West Kaiwaka will have to wait until
mid-winter 2026 to exact its revenge – maybe!
The sun having set, the greatly anticipated lantern parade
assembled. This year’s parade was larger

WEATHER
MAY
May was quite a bit drier than April at
our place, and I recorded 147ml over
15 days.
In the Hakaru Valley Derek recorded
145ml over 15 days. This is the closest
we have had recordings over the last
couple of years.
The highest recording I have had for
the month of May, was in 2023 with a
recording of 324.5ml.
The lowest recording for May was in
2007 with a mere 35ml.
The trees at our place are getting
confused – while some are still losing
their Autumn leaves, our fruit trees are
getting their spring blossoms. That
means that summer is not very far
away (sorry to scare you).
Have a great June and July.
Cheers, Karen.

GOOD NEWS FOR KAIWAKA SAFETY
AND CONNECTIVITY
Back in 2020 I approached Hon. Shane Jones who at the time was the Minister
for Regional Economic Development overseeing the Provincial Growth Fund.
I pitched to him a Kaiwaka Can concept to link up central Kaiwaka and with
Minister Jones' support cabinet approved a budget of $750,000 for two
footbridges and an interconnecting footpath on the western side of town.
The two bridges were built but this used all of the budget at the time. Last year I
gained support to complete the project with Council allocating the remaining
budget for the footpath.
Works on the footpath were started yesterday by Wharehine Contractors and are
scheduled to be completed by mid-August.
The state highway is only going to get busier, and the proposed district plan
identifies significant potential commercial rezoning just west of the highway.
Taking these points into consideration, it makes this project even more
important for the improvement of pedestrian safety and connectivity in
Kaiwaka.

than previous years, with well
over 400 people setting off on the
1.7km route around the village.
The benefits from the popular
lantern making workshops were
evident through the amazing
variety and creativity of lanterns
on display. The parade set off
from

grounds,
walking first through the 400m
long kauri bush trail. There in the
dark a taniwha lay in wait,
greeting parade goers as they passed with a graceful swaying dance. Later along
the route performers danced with colourfully lit umbrellas, and when the parade
reached Eutopia Café a team of fire dancers put on a splendid show as hot
chocolate was distributed. Thus fortified the parade was welcomed back to the
KSA with a rousing kapa haka performance by students from Kaiwaka School.
The community saw out the evening toasting marshmallows over braziers to the
musical sounds of Happy Fish and with more fire dancing in the background.
MID-WINTER COMMUNITY TRADITION
The 2025 Kaiwaka Lantern Festival has continued the tradition of providing free
family fun for all the community at mid-winter. The Festival is an initiative by
Kaiwaka Can Inc, a community action group dedicated to making Kaiwaka an
even better place to live. Between 600 and 800 people attended the event overall,
enjoying the entertainment, food and beverages and participating in all the fun.
THANK YOU
The Festival is made possible through the very generous support of local
businesses contributing cash for festival expenses as well as in-kind prizes and
items sold through the silent auction. So successful was this year’s sponsorship
drive that it generated a surplus, to be applied to the construction of Kaiwaka’s
new skate park, another Kaiwaka Can project.
Warm thanks are owed to the hard-working team of volunteers that pulled
together such a memorable day for Kaiwaka. Volunteering with Kaiwaka Can
provides the perfect opportunity to meet people from around the community and
work together to bring about such rewarding
projects.

INTERACT CLUB
I have been fortunate to attend two
Rotary events during the past month.
The first one was for District 9910’s
AGM and conference. This is a great
opportunity to meet with fellow
Rotarians from throughout the north
and learn more about the projects they
are
offering.
Each
year
the
International President has a theme and
for the Rotary year running from 1
July, the theme is “Uniting for Good”.
The focus for the coming year will be
on
Innovation,
Continuity
and
Partnership. It has been suggested that
while it is great for our Clubs to have
our own projects, there is much to be
gained from collaborating with other
groups. This is something that we will
be looking into in the coming year so if
you have any suggestions, please let
me know.
I was also fortunate to attend the
Centennial Celebrations of Whangarei
Rotary Club. Guest speakers included
Shane Reti (who mentioned that this
club was the initiator of Milk in
Schools in 1935 – many of us will
remember
those
bottles), Vince
Cocurullo (Mayor) and Karen Smith
who was the first woman Principal of
Whangarei Boys about 10 years ago).
The function was held in the
auditorium of Whangarei Boys (what a
facility this is, and I am told that as
part of the redevelopment of the
school, they now have a hospitality
section.) We were also privileged to
hear a young piper from Whangarei
Boys and the winner of this year’s
Rotary speech contest, who came from
Whangarei Girls.
On the Sunday, the Club was planting
100 native trees at Raumanga (beside
McDonalds).
Looks like our involvement with young
people is continuing to grow. Not only
do we have the Interact Club who have
decided what their first activity will be
(as we are so close to term end, this
will not start until next
term, but it sounds really
exciting.) We
have also been offered one
or two places at the Rotary
leadership course for Year
12 students (RYPEN). This
will
be held
at
Y
Shakespear Lodge, Whangaparaoa in
late August. Interest has been very high
from school students so there will have
to be a selection process. We have not
been involved with this previously, but
the program sounds very exciting and
challenging.
Driver mentoring continues to go well,
and we have a new Mentor on board,
which is great. The students at
Otamatea are taking part in a
Defensive Driving course again, and
the youngsters who come through this
have a better knowledge of what to
watch out for.
Thank you to all who contributed to
“Cans for a Cause” either through local
schools or Supermarkets. The food
collected from these venues was given
to Foodbanks in both Kaiwaka and
Maungaturoto. We really appreciated
your support.

KAIWAKA SCHOOL
News from Principal, Michelle Dempsey
Kia ora, Talofa lava, Kamusta, Guten Tag, Bula,
Namaste, Ciao, Hola, Kon’nichiwa, Week 9 is nearing an
end, and the school break starts on Friday afternoon at
2.20pm.
Our students have been working so hard to get WAKA
school value cards and our jar is full!
The school will be closed for instruction (your holiday
time) from 30 June until 11 July. Teachers will be
working flexible hours preparing teaching and learning
programs for next term.
The first day back for Term 3 will be Monday 14 July,
8.30am.
Sadly the annual Matariki celebration had to be cancelled
due to the wet weather. This would have included
our kapa haka in the KSA and an opportunity to
enjoy the student artwork.
Our junior school roll has experienced growth in
the Year 1 and Year 2 age groups.
Annual Lantern Festival -our kura was privileged
to perform some waiata led by our amazing
whaea Mina. Thank you to our fantastic parents,
whanau and students for making our performance
this evening a success.
The annual Kidz Bop dance competition was a
great success, photos left - top, first; mid, second.
Photo below - our year 3 literacy group had lots of fun this morning making
cookie stars for Matariki .

DEPUTY MAYOR JONATHAN LARSEN
TO STAND FOR KAIPARA MAYORALTY
Deputy Mayor Jonathan Larsen has announced he is standing for Mayor of the
Kaipara District Council in the 2025 local government election.
Mr Larsen brings a wealth of experience to the role, having served four terms as
a Kaipara District Councillor. He has served as the chair of the District Plan
Working Party and the Kaipara Economic Development Committee, and
represents Kaipara on both the Northland Joint Regional Economic
Development Committee and the Regional Local Waters Done Well Working
Group. A Chair-certified Resource Management Act Commissioner, Mr Larsen
also holds a Bachelor of Science degree, and an Executive Master of Business
Administration degree with First Class Honours.
“Council has made great progress during the current term. I will continue to take
Kaipara forward by providing stability, prudent financial management and
strong leadership. I intend to lead a unified Kaipara District,” said Mr Larsen.
Mr Larsen has a proven track record of community service. In addition to his
council work, he has served as a professional firefighter, trainer and station
officer for over 25 years.
Mr Larsen says his focus will be on ensuring council delivers core services
efficiently, while planning responsibly for growth and investment. “I’m standing
to ensure we stay on course, maintain momentum, and build a prosperous future
for Kaipara.”

ACTIVITIES at the COMPLEX
Recent activities included
the special Awards
evening for elite shearer
Toa Henderson, when he
received
the
Kaiwaka
Sports Assn. Sportsman of he Year
Trophy (presented by Gay and Brian
Jaques). Toa is currently in the UK
representing NZ in 6 shearing tests
along with team mate Jack Fagan.
The Kaiwaka School has had a fun
Kidz Bop competition. And the
community was involved in the Annual
Lantern Festival with the East - West
Tug of War, a lots of food available, a
silent auction, Happy Fish music and
the wonderful parade through the bush and around town.
SECURITY UPGRADE
The decision was made to upgrade the outdoor
security with an additional camera to cover more of
the car park with a live screen inside the gym of the
carpark so you can see the carpark while training, and
an additional 5 LED sensor security lights to flood
the carpark with light when someone walks past.
Tom from TW Electrical installed LED lights that
automatically turn on when the sun goes down and
will stay on all night until sunrise. Sadly there had
been cars broken into while parked
outside .

It's Goodbye to PressReader,
hello to ePress on BorrowBox
Kaipara District Libraries are
ceasing the PressReader digital
newspaper and magazine service
at the end of this month. The cost
of it is not justified by the usage,
sadly.
In its place is ePress on
BorrowBox, one of the digital
book services we've had for years.
It has some popular NZ titles in it,
such as the Herald, Listener, Woman's Day, Kiwi Gardener,
NZ Woman's Weekly, Your Home & Garden, and The
Shed, but not the wide range of overseas titles that we could
access from PressReader.
Download and install the BorrowBox app on your phone or
tablet or go to https://kaipara.borrowbox.com/ in a browser.
Log in with your library card number and PIN, and you're
away laughing. Look for "ePress", either at the top or
bottom of the window (top in the browser, bottom on my
phone's app).
The borrowing will work a little differently to what we're
used to - there will be multiple copies of each title that can
be read simultaneously by lots of readers, but please return
the title when you're done reading, so someone else can
have their turn with it.
Still want to access those other titles
? As a resident in
Kaipara District, you can join Whangarei Library for free,
and they have PressReader - see their web site https://
www.wdc.govt.nz/library/ Similarly, if you also have an
Auckland Libraries card, they have it too.
If you have any problems accessing BorrowBox, please
come in with your device so we can help you or contact
Dargaville Library (0800 532 542) and the staff there will
be happy to help get your sorted.
BOOK REVIEW
All That We
Know
by
Shilo Kino
. "Meet
Māreikura she's in love with her best
friend Eru, who's leaving to go on a
church mission, and she's an accidental
activist - becoming an online sensation
after her speech goes viral. But does she
really want the spotlight? Navigating self-
diagnosed ADHD, a new romantic
relationship, forging friendships and
reclaiming her language all at once is no
easy feat. And as her platform grows,
Māreikura is unwittingly placed on a
pedestal as a voice for change against the historical wrongs of
colonisation. The question at what personal cost?"
This was a delightful read from start to finish, and I'm
looking forward to more by this author in future.
See you in the library! ~Wendy
